Todd Boehly's Attempt to Sign Cristiano Ronaldo Blocked by Tuchel

Todd Boehly pushed to sign Cristiano Ronaldo during the Portuguese star’s turbulent second spell at Manchester United, only to be blocked by then‑Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.

According to The Athletic, Boehly flew to Portugal to meet super-agent Jorge Mendes and left the talks captivated by the prospect of bringing Ronaldo to Stamford Bridge. With Ronaldo increasingly disillusioned at Old Trafford, the opportunity looked tempting. A global icon on the market. A new owner eager to make a statement.

Tuchel wanted no part of it.

The German coach repeatedly made his opposition clear, shutting down the idea of building his attack around the veteran forward. It became one of the early fault lines in the relationship between the head coach and Chelsea’s new ownership.

That rift did not form in isolation. Pressure grew as a series of ambitious targets slipped away. Boehly and Chelsea failed to land Matthijs de Ligt, Raphinha, Frenkie de Jong and Presnel Kimpembe, missing out on marquee names in several key positions. The frustration around recruitment only added to the tension.

Raheem Sterling was different. That deal went through without the same internal resistance. Boehly personally drove the negotiations with Manchester City, eventually sealing a £47.5 million move that gave the new regime its first major attacking signing.

Months later, Boehly publicly acknowledged how raw his approach to the market had been. Speaking at an event in February, he admitted he had stumbled through the summer window while doubling up as interim sporting director.

“I found myself stuck in the interim sporting director role over the summer, without knowing what makes a footballer good,” he said. “But I knew that if Manchester City wanted Marc Cucurella, then I wanted him. It was as simple as that.”

By January 2023, Boehly stepped away from that interim sporting director role. The Ronaldo pursuit was long gone, the window closed, and Chelsea’s transfer power structure already shifting again.
