Bishop Ends Drought as Portsmouth Draw with Blackburn at Fratton Park

Colby Bishop finally found the net again and Portsmouth needed it, clawing back a point in a breathless 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Fratton Park.

Dropped to the bench after a barren spell and with only three goals in the last year, Bishop came on to rescue his side with a trademark header – his first strike since April – as two flawed defences and two ambitious attacks went toe to toe on the south coast.

Lightning start, early sting

The game barely had time to settle. Todd Cantwell forced Daniel Bielica into action after just 22 seconds, a low strike signalling Blackburn’s intent.

But Pompey struck first. After three and a half minutes, Jayden Meghoma swung in a cross from the left. Sean McLoughlin’s header clear fell perfectly to Zak Swanson on the edge of the box. Swanson watched the bouncing ball, set himself, and volleyed through a crowd. Balazs Toth never saw it properly. Fratton Park erupted.

Blackburn’s response was sharp and ruthless. The lead lasted less than seven minutes.

Harry Pickering slid a pass into Oladapo Afolayan on the left corner of the area. Afolayan squared up Marlon Pack, skipped around him and drove in a low right-footed shot. Bielica was beaten at his near post and suddenly the contest had the feel of a shootout.

Rovers pounce on errors

The first half swung from one end to the other. Chelsea loanee Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, outstanding again at just 17, almost punished Toth four minutes before the break. The goalkeeper’s weak pass out was picked off and Kavuma-McQueen burst forward, hammering a left-footed effort that Toth managed to claw away.

Portsmouth came out after the interval with purpose. Kavuma-McQueen forced another save from Toth on 54 minutes, a firm drive palmed out, and Pack’s follow-up was deflected wide. The home side looked in control.

Then they gifted it away.

Three minutes later, Bielica miscued a clearance straight into trouble. Kristi Montgomery intercepted, and Blackburn worked it quickly to Ryoya Morishita on the right side of the box. The Japan international didn’t hesitate, drilling a right-footed shot across goal and into the bottom left corner. From promise to punishment in a heartbeat.

Bishop answers the call

Portsmouth needed a response. Kavuma-McQueen supplied the spark again.

Picking up the ball on the right of the penalty area, he spun his marker and unleashed a powerful effort. It looked goalbound. Bishop made sure. The substitute darted across the six-yard box and glanced the ball in with his head, changing the flight just enough to leave Toth helpless.

For Bishop, it was a release. For Portsmouth, it was lifeline.

The game stretched in the closing stages. Tackles flew in, legs tired, and space opened up. Pompey almost stole it in stoppage time when Meghoma surged forward and let fly, but Toth stood firm once more, preserving Blackburn’s point.

Table, tension, and what comes next

The draw keeps Blackburn in 16th on nine points, two places and one point ahead of Portsmouth, who have a game in hand. Neither side will be satisfied with the defending. Both will cling to the attacking verve.

For Pompey, the bigger question lingers: if Bishop is finally back among the goals, how much could that change the shape of their season?
