Andros Townsend Survives Bizarre Pitch Roller Incident in Thailand

Andros Townsend has survived plenty of rough away days in English football, but nothing quite like this.

The former England winger was run over by a pitch roller in Thailand – and still managed to play later that night.

Townsend, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, was going through his warm-up before a match at Pattani when chaos broke out. A member of the home staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller, which suddenly veered into the 35-year-old.

The machine crashed into Townsend, and his left leg was briefly trapped underneath. Footage of the incident quickly spread on social media, showing the 13-cap England international knocked off his feet in a surreal, almost slapstick moment that could easily have been far more serious.

Somehow, he escaped major injury. Townsend dusted himself down and later came off the bench in Prachuap’s 3-0 win, turning a frightening pre-match scare into one of the most bizarre episodes of his career.

A regular ITV pundit these days, the ex-Tottenham and Crystal Palace winger chose to laugh it off. On Instagram, he poked fun at his own recent post where he had contrasted a sun-soaked Thai away day with the famously bleak trips to Stoke’s stadium.

“It turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all. Swipe to see why,” he wrote on his Instagram story, inviting followers to watch the clip of the incident.

Another post circulating online dubbed him “The King of Memes in Thai League history”. Townsend leaned into the joke again, replying “trust me” followed by four laughing emojis.

Stoke on a cold Tuesday night always had a reputation. Getting run over by a pitch roller in Pattani has just rewritten Townsend’s personal definition of a tough away day.
