Jack Moylan Shines in Cardiff's First Championship Win

Jack Moylan announced himself to the Cardiff faithful in emphatic style, striking twice and creating another as Brian Barry-Murphy’s side finally claimed their first Championship win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Charlton.

For a fanbase waiting, and worrying, after seven league games without a win since promotion from League One, this felt like a dam bursting.

Moylan takes centre stage

Cardiff’s marquee summer signing needed just eight minutes to justify the hype. The Republic of Ireland forward, signed from Lincoln after earlier spells with Shelbourne and Bohemians, darted into space and opened the scoring to release the tension inside the ground.

He didn’t stop there.

On 24 minutes, Moylan turned provider, sliding in Yousef Salech to make it 2-0 and put Barry-Murphy’s team firmly in control. Every time he picked up the ball, Charlton backed off a little further. Every touch carried threat.

Charlton did find a route back when Tyreece Campbell cut the deficit, asking a familiar question of a newly promoted side still searching for belief.

This time, Cardiff answered it.

Barely had the visitors started to sense momentum when Moylan killed the contest. Picking up possession on the edge of the area just after the hour, he unleashed a stunning strike that flew beyond the keeper and settled the game at 3-1. One assist, two goals, and a statement performance.

Barry-Murphy’s belief rewarded

Barry-Murphy, who has insisted throughout the winless run that performances were better than results suggested, made no attempt to hide his satisfaction.

“It was a very important game for us,” he said. “We felt as if we’d been playing reasonably well and we have to do it again. We knew today’s game was going to be tough, but we played a great game, created really good chances and we took enough of them to win.”

Preparation had clearly been detailed.

“We obviously had a real awareness of what Charlton do and how effective they can be, but we got into the spaces we needed to and created good chances,” he explained. “I was particularly pleased with the response to conceding the goal because that was obviously a test for us.

“We bounced back pretty much straight away and kept creating good chances. In the second half, I felt as if we ran out deserving winners.”

The manager also underlined that this performance had been coming.

“You don’t always get what you feel you deserve,” he said. “We were clear with the players that there were certain games where we weren’t at our best, but we had full belief that if we kept playing the way we were playing and managed to score the goals we felt we would, we could win the game.”

A signing that changes the picture

At the heart of that belief now stands Moylan. Barry-Murphy made it clear this was no opportunistic signing.

“We felt as if we were bringing a player who would improve the squad when we bought Jack Moylan. He has qualities we probably didn’t have before,” he said.

“He’s a very dangerous player in the situations you saw him in today. The big appeal for us was because of where he’s come from, he has a lot of improvement in him. The way he’s working means he will improve a lot and become a great player for the club.”

On a day when Cardiff finally found their feet in the Championship, Moylan looked every inch the forward they can build around. The wait for a first win is over; the question now is how far this reshaped side, with a new talisman emerging, can climb.
