Sunderland Nears £30m Deal for Malick Fofana as Europa League Bid Intensifies

Sunderland are on the brink of a statement signing, having agreed a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana.

The 21-year-old Belgium forward is travelling to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract, underlining the club’s intent ahead of their first European campaign in 51 years.

The agreement with Lyon is for an initial £25.6m, with a further £4.3m tied to performance-related add-ons. For a player who only joined the Ligue 1 side in 2024 after coming through at KAA Gent, it marks a rapid rise – and a major outlay from Sunderland.

Fofana is understood to be enthusiastic about the move, attracted by the chance to spearhead Sunderland’s return to Europe in the Europa League. The club’s resurgence, capped by a seventh-place finish in their first season back in the top flight, has turned Wearside into a far more compelling destination.

Arsenal had tried to muscle in earlier in the summer. The Premier League champions pushed to sign Fofana but failed to reach an agreement with Lyon over the fee, opening the door for Sunderland to step in and close a deal.

The winger is set to join a growing continental core. He will link up with Austria defender Kevin Danso, who is due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan that includes an option to buy.

Sunderland have already moved aggressively in the market, bringing in defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, along with midfielder Jules Ahoka. Each signing adds another layer to a squad being built not just to survive, but to compete – at home and now, once again, across Europe.
