Helmer's Fiery Clash with Uli Hoeneß at Bayern
Uli Hoeneß stepped onto the Sport Bild gala stage on Monday night to collect the Legend Award. Out in front of the cameras, it was all applause and tributes for the long-time Bayern powerbroker.
On the red carpet, though, Thomas Helmer added a very different kind of homage.
The former Bayern defender revealed he once came close to physically attacking Hoeneß during a freezing Champions League night in Munich.
“He sometimes did wild things as well,” Helmer recalled. “When he gets emotional, I experienced him differently in the dressing room too. We almost had a fight once as well. I wanted to beat up Uli Hoeneß.”
A Frozen Champions League Night, A Boiling Dressing Room
Helmer took reporters back to what he believes was a European tie against Dynamo Kyiv at the old Olympiastadion. The setting sounded miserable.
“Old Olympic Stadium, felt like minus 17 degrees, 13,000 spectators – but live on television,” he said. “We were 1-0 up at half-time, but I think Kyiv ran through on our goal three times, they just did not get the ball in.”
The scoreline flattered Bayern. Hoeneß was having none of it.
Then, as Helmer tells it, the club boss exploded in the dressing room.
Hoeneß “went crazy: ‘What are you playing at, what are you serving up to the spectators? This is an outrage for Bayern Munich. Millions are watching, no matter how many are here in the stadium… even if it is cold.’”
Helmer walked past him. That’s when it escalated.
“I then walked past him and he yelled: ‘and you’re running around like my grandfather!’”
A Cup, A Wall – And A Quick Escape
The insult cut deep. Helmer wasn’t about to just swallow it.
He grabbed the nearest thing to hand.
He then “took a cup of electrolytes and wanted to throw it at his head. But I did not hit him, I hit the wall. Then he was smart enough to go to the physios in the dressing room and hide.”
The confrontation stopped there. No punches, no scandal, just a dented wall and a story that would resurface decades later on a gala red carpet.
From Near-Fight to Lifelong Trust
The fallout? Barely lasted a day.
“By the next day, the anger on both sides had already blown over,” Helmer said. “The next day we then had a completely open conversation. Uli never held a grudge.”
That, Helmer insists, is the real Hoeneß.
Despite the touchline rants and dressing-room eruptions, the former defender still talks about the Bayern patriarch with unmistakable warmth.
“There are two people in the world I would go to if I had a problem. No matter whether private, financial or health-related – one of them is Uli Hoeneß!”
A night that once left a cup smashed against a wall now serves as proof of something else: at Bayern, the tempers may flare, but the bonds forged in those storms tend to last.
