Scott McTominay Undergoes Heart Surgery, Misses Nations League Matches

Scott McTominay will miss Scotland’s upcoming Nations League campaign as he undergoes corrective surgery for a minor heart issue, Napoli have confirmed.

The former Manchester United midfielder has been diagnosed with what the Italian club described as “a mild benign arrhythmia” – an abnormal or irregular heart rhythm that has been deemed non-serious and not a significant risk to his overall health. Even so, doctors have opted for a short procedure to correct it.

Short lay-off, major absences

Napoli announced on Tuesday that McTominay will be sidelined for their September fixtures, ruling him out of next week’s Champions League clash with Arsenal. It is a sizeable blow for the Serie A side, who have quickly come to rely on the 27-year-old’s drive and presence in midfield.

The repercussions stretch beyond club level. McTominay will also sit out new Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli’s first four matches in charge: a double-header against Slovenia, followed by meetings with Switzerland and North Macedonia in the Nations League. For a manager trying to stamp his authority and build around one of his most influential players, it is a difficult early setback.

Napoli outlined the situation in a brief medical update, stating: “Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation in the coming days. He will be available again after the international break.”

The message is clear. This is a precaution, not a crisis. But for both Napoli and Scotland, the calendar will feel a little heavier until McTominay is back patrolling midfield again.
