Lion City Sailors Sacks Coach Jesus Casas Before Season Opener
SINGAPORE – Lion City Sailors have stunned the Singapore football scene by sacking head coach Jesus Casas just five days before they open the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) campaign against Tampines Rovers.
The club announced the move on Sept 1 with a blunt, 30-word statement on Facebook, confirming that they had parted ways with the Spaniard and that assistant coach Varo Moreno would take charge of the first team until further notice.
No explanation. No farewell quotes. Just a clean break.
Casas’ exit comes barely months into what was supposed to be a long-term project. The former Iraq coach was only appointed in February and had signed a deal running through to the end of the 2027-28 season with the reigning SPL champions.
His resume had looked substantial. Before taking the Iraq job, the 52-year-old worked extensively in Spanish youth football and served as assistant manager to Javi Gracia at English side Watford in early 2018. He had also been on the shortlist for the Singapore national team role, which eventually went to Gavin Lee.
His name has not been far from the international carousel either. The Korea Herald recently reported that Casas had applied for the vacant South Korea national team job and was one of three candidates on the final shortlist.
Now his time in Singapore has ended almost as abruptly as it began.
Casas had replaced Serbian coach Aleksandar Rankovic, who was dismissed on Feb 6, a day after the Sailors suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Cambodian side Svay Rieng in the Asean Club Championship. Rankovic’s tenure had delivered trophies but also disappointment. Across a 2½-year spell, he led the Sailors to the Singapore Cup for the third time and secured an SPL title, yet also presided over a group-stage exit in Asian Champions League Two, a year after the club had enjoyed a dream run to the final of the same competition.
Domestically, the Sailors have remained the team to beat. On May 3, they clinched back-to-back SPL titles for the first time in their history, grinding out a 0-0 draw with Tampines Rovers that was enough to seal the championship. They finished the season two points clear of the Stags.
Now those same opponents stand in front of them again.
The two sides meet on Sept 6 in the Community Shield at Jalan Besar Stadium at 7.30pm, the traditional curtain-raiser to the 2026-27 season. It will double as Moreno’s first test in the hot seat and an immediate gauge of how the dressing room has absorbed the shock.
The Sailors then launch their SPL title defence in earnest on Sept 12, when they face Hougang United at Bishan Stadium, also at 7.30pm.
A champion club, a vacant dugout, and a season starting in days. The margin for error has just shrunk to almost nothing.
