Scott McTominay to Undergo Heart Procedure for Arrhythmia

Napoli have confirmed that Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay will undergo a minor heart procedure after the discovery of what the club describe as “a mild benign arrhythmia”.

The 29-year-old was withdrawn after 56 minutes of Sunday’s 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como, with the issue identified and assessed in the aftermath of the match. Napoli say he will have corrective treatment “in the coming days” and expect him back in action after the international break in early October.

McTominay moved quickly to reassure supporters, posting on Instagram: “See you soon Napoli. I won't take long.”

His absence, though, lands an early blow for new Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli. McTominay is now likely to miss Pocognoli’s first four matches in charge – a home-and-away double-header against Slovenia, followed by Nations League fixtures against North Macedonia and Switzerland.

According to the NHS, an arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat, when the heart beats too fast, too slowly, or with an unsteady rhythm. Napoli’s description of the condition as “mild” and “benign” underpins their confidence that McTominay will resume his season once the procedure is complete.

For club and country, the expectation is clear: a short interruption, then a key midfielder back at the heart of things.
