The European champions have opened talks with RB Leipzig and, according to Bild, put down a first marker: €100 million. Serious money, but not serious enough for Leipzig. The German club have pushed back, unimpressed by the opening salvo and pointing to a valuation closer to €130m.

The reality is harsher. Keeping hold of a 19-year-old who has just detonated his first Bundesliga season, with Madrid, PSG and Liverpool circling, is an increasingly uphill task. Leipzig have lived this cycle before. They know that the real battle is not whether he leaves, but on what terms.

A year ago, Yan Diomande was a promising winger with only 10 LaLiga appearances and a bold move on his CV. RB Leipzig paid €20m to Leganés to bring him in, a fee that raised eyebrows for a player with so little top-flight experience.
