Harvey Elliott in Talks for Loan Move to Valencia
Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the transfer window ticks towards Tuesday night’s deadline.
The Spanish club have moved to the front of the queue for the 23-year-old, who has attracted interest from several sides across the summer. With the window closing at 11pm on September 1, Valencia are pushing to get a deal done.
Elliott is understood to have spoken directly with Valencia boss Carlos Corberan about his potential role at Mestalla, with the conversations centring on regular minutes and a defined place in Corberan’s plans. Any loan agreement is expected to run alongside discussions over a possible Liverpool contract extension to protect the value of the former England Under-21 international, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2028.
The attacking midfielder has yet to make a match-day squad under new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola. His situation follows a frustrating season at Aston Villa, where he spent most of the campaign on the fringes.
Elliott’s late cameo in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Newcastle a year ago proved decisive for his short-term future. That appearance meant he could not secure another move in the January window, locking him into a spell at Villa where opportunities were scarce.
Villa, conscious of the terms of the agreement, were determined he did not reach the 10-game threshold that would have activated a £35m obligation to buy. While Unai Emery’s side went on to lift the Europa League, Elliott remained on the periphery, never quite trusted with the run of games that would have turned his stay into a permanent one.
Back at Liverpool for the pre-season tour of the United States, Elliott cut an honest figure when asked about his future after a 1-0 win over Wrexham in New York on July 30. He admitted he was weighing up his options and had yet to decide whether to stay and fight for a place or seek a fresh start elsewhere, stressing the need to be “cautious” with his next move while still being “selfish” enough to put his own career first.
Liverpool had been expecting formal contact from Valencia before the weekend, and those initial signals have now developed into direct talks over a loan.
Elliott, a boyhood Liverpool fan, joined from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already racked up 149 appearances for the club. Now the question is whether his next chapter unfolds under the lights at Anfield, or in the heat of Mestalla with Valencia gambling that they can unlock the version of Elliott England once tipped for the very top.
