Mourinho Defines Valverde's Role: Midfielder, Not Utility Player
For years, Federico Valverde has been Real Madrid’s all‑purpose solution. Need a right-back? Valverde. Short in wide areas? Valverde. Extra legs in midfield? Valverde again.
He has worn every role the white shirt could ask of him – full-back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, winger – and he has worn them well. Successive coaches have leaned on that versatility and praised him for it.
Jose Mourinho is cutting through all of that.
According to MARCA, the new Real Madrid manager has no interest in turning Valverde into a utility man. He sees him in one zone and one zone only: the middle of the pitch, as a deep-lying midfielder. Not a roaming fix-all, not a touchline runner. A pivot.
A flying start in the double pivot
Mourinho’s stance is backed by early evidence. Valverde has opened the season as a starter, anchoring the team in a double pivot alongside Bernardo Silva in both of Madrid’s games so far.
From there, his influence has been clear.
Against Real Sociedad, the Uruguayan delivered the kind of all-round performance that makes a coach double down on his ideas. He recorded three defensive actions, two recoveries and one interception. No opponent dribbled past him all game. He won two duels. He completed 93% of his passes.
And he didn’t just sit and recycle. He stepped forward at the right moments, setting up Kylian Mbappé with an assist and testing the goalkeeper with two shots of his own.
Those numbers tell Mourinho something simple: Valverde’s best work comes when the game runs through him in central midfield.
With solid options now available at full-back and on the right wing, the temptation to drag him out of that zone has faded. Mourinho wants continuity and clarity, and Valverde, for now, is the heartbeat of his midfield structure.
The Tchouameni question
There is, however, a problem looming on the horizon. Aurelien Tchouameni.
The Frenchman has been Real Madrid’s natural pivot for some time, the reference point in front of the defence and, under most managers, the first name in that role. He was widely expected to be Mourinho’s main partner for Bernardo Silva in the double pivot.
Only injury has kept that from happening.
Tchouameni’s absence opened a door and Valverde walked straight through it, using this early run of games to cement himself in Mourinho’s plans and climb the internal hierarchy. His start to the season has been smooth, even serene, partly because he has not had to look over his shoulder at the returning specialist in his position.
That comfort will not last.
Tchouameni is closing in on a return, and with it comes the kind of selection dilemma that defines a season. Mourinho has made it clear: Valverde is a midfielder, not a makeshift full-back or winger. The central lane is where he wants him. It is also where Tchouameni lives.
Two high-level options. One pivot to fill. One double pivot to balance.
When the Frenchman is fit again, something will have to give – minutes, role, or hierarchy. And in a Real Madrid midfield already rich in talent, the next decision Mourinho makes there will say plenty about how he intends to build this team’s spine for the months ahead.
