Carrick Aims for Performance and Win in Old Trafford Opener
Michael Carrick wants more than just three points on Sunday. He wants a response, a performance, and a show for Old Trafford.
The first home game of the season always carries a different weight, and Carrick did little to play that down as he looked ahead to the weekend clash.
“We want a good performance and a win, obviously,” he said. “The first home game of the season is one we really look forward to, and with the supporters coming, we're massively looking forward to the game.
“We had a setback last week and we want to get back to playing well and winning football matches. It's another tough game again. They obviously had a big result last week as well, so it'll be another challenge for us. But, yeah, massively looking forward to it.”
A setback, and then another
That early-season bump he mentioned has been followed by another blow off the pitch. United’s preparations have been hit by the news that £70 million summer signing Carlos Baleba will be out for up to three weeks with an ankle problem picked up after his move from Brighton.
The club also confirmed that Amad Diallo is sidelined, trimming Carrick’s attacking and midfield options just as he looks to set the tone for the campaign in front of the home crowd.
Losing a marquee signing so soon after his arrival is not the script any manager wants before a home opener. But Carrick has chosen to lean into the positives rather than dwell on the absentees.
U21s provide a spark
If the first team stuttered last week, the club’s under-21s delivered the kind of performance Carrick is desperate to see replicated at Old Trafford. They dismantled Ipswich 5-0 at Leigh, a display full of energy, precision and, in the case of one teenager, pure audacity.
Fifteen-year-old JJ Gabriel stole the headlines with a sublime goal that underlined why his name is already echoing around the academy corridors.
“I thought the boys played ever so well, actually,” Carrick said, clearly buoyed by what he had seen. “A really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see the quality. I really enjoyed the game.
“I'm really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it, the quality, the attitude. Everything about the game was really good, so really encouraged by that.”
Gabriel, still only 15, is already training regularly with the seniors and adapting quickly to each new level thrown at him.
“JJ's one of the boys,” Carrick added. “He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit, he's getting experience all the time, he's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and we'll continue his development.”
Between the injury list and the academy’s surge of promise, Carrick walks into Sunday with a familiar managerial dilemma: lean on experience, or ride the wave of youthful momentum in front of a restless, expectant Old Trafford crowd.
