Lamine Camara Focuses on Monaco After Chelsea Move Falls Through

Lamine Camara insists he has “turned the page” on a collapsed £47.1m move to Chelsea and is throwing his energy into Monaco’s Ligue 1 campaign.

The 22-year-old midfielder had gone as far as completing a medical before the transfer fell apart in the final hours of the window, bringing a dramatic end to a saga that had already seen two bids rejected.

Monaco, under pressure to make a major sale this summer, had initially held firm on their valuation. As the deadline loomed and negotiations swirled, they lowered their asking price for Camara during a chaotic final stretch in which another deal threatened to unravel.

Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton briefly looked in serious doubt, a twist that pushed Monaco towards considering Camara as the big outgoing transfer to balance the books. When Balogun’s switch appeared to be back on, Monaco seemed to cool on the idea of losing their Senegal international.

In the end, nothing moved. Both Camara and Balogun stayed.

“There was a possibility I could leave,” Camara said ahead of Monaco’s game against Strasbourg on Saturday. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season.”

Voices in France had long suggested Monaco needed at least one significant sale, with Balogun identified as the preferred departure. Inside the club, the message around Camara had been clear: it would take a “substantial fee” to prise him away.

On the pitch, Monaco have started like a team untroubled by the noise. Three wins from three in Ligue 1 put them second behind Rennes, with a game in hand, heading into the weekend. Stability in the squad has only sharpened expectations.

“I can help the team a lot,” Camara said. “Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

The move to England is gone. The audition for the next one has already started.
