Benjamin Sesko's Journey: From Injury to Manchester United Star
Benjamin Sesko walks back into the spotlight with the calm of a man who has finally stopped worrying about the next twinge.
For months, his story at Manchester United had a hitch in it – a nagging shin problem that cut short his debut campaign and wrecked his pre-season. Now, after marking his return to the starting XI in the Champions League, the Slovenian striker is convinced that chapter is over.
“It was basically just to make sure that it doesn't get worse,” Sesko explained of the club’s cautious handling of his recovery. Medical staff resisted every temptation to rush him back. He accepted the wait. He had to.
“We just need a little bit longer than usual, because if you start too early, it might appear again,” he said. “And I think waiting a little bit longer was a great decision, and now it's healed, so it's perfect. It was shin.”
This wasn’t a freak knock that cleared up in a fortnight. The problem had been brewing. Sesko traced it back to the closing stretch of last season – a heavy kick combined with the relentless demands of Premier League football and his own physical output.
“I got a kick last season, but it was also a little bit of an overload from myself. So basically, that was it,” the 23-year-old admitted.
The timing was cruel. He had battled through adaptation pains in England and still found 12 goals in his first season. Just as he looked ready to kick on, his body called a halt. The summer that should have sharpened him instead became a long, careful reset.
Now the tone is different. The language is lighter. The goals are still the measure, but the feeling around him has changed.
“Way better, especially than last season,” Sesko said of his life in Manchester. “I changed a country. Everything was new for me. Now for me it's like I'm really enjoying it. I'm really happy here. I love life here. I have teammates that are perfect. I can't really complain about anything.”
The move from Germany to England hit him harder than he let on at first. New league, new expectations, a different rhythm to every week. The whirlwind of that first year has settled into something steadier now: routine, familiarity, a sense that he belongs at Old Trafford rather than just passing through.
United’s interest in him is no overnight romance either. The club had tracked Sesko since he was a teenager, a raw 16-year-old with the frame and instincts of a top-level centre-forward. The path could have been more dramatic – a leap straight from Red Bull Salzburg or even from Slovenia to Manchester – but he and his camp resisted the shortcut.
“It was just basically the moment that we decided because I think it was important,” he said. “It would be a little bit too huge of a step for me to jump from, let’s say, Austria or Slovenia directly to Manchester United. So I just needed those steps to get better and better and I’m finally here.”
Salzburg, then Leipzig, then the Premier League. Each move a rung up the ladder, each season another layer of preparation for the pressure that comes with wearing United red.
Now the shin is right, the mind is clear, and the stage he spent years climbing towards is finally his to attack. The question is no longer whether Benjamin Sesko is ready for Manchester United – it’s how far he can take them now that his body has stopped holding him back.
