Jordan Henderson is on the brink of a Chelsea debut – and the scriptwriters have had their fun with this one.

Alonso admitted last week he was “hopeful” the midfielder would be ready to play some part against Brentford. The optimism around the club suggests that hope has only grown.

Chelsea fans are ready for it. Desperate, even.

Recent outings with Reece James and Romeo Lavia paired in central midfield have drawn criticism, with many supporters wanting a specialist presence to steady the centre of the pitch. More than 3,800 supporters voted in favour of throwing him straight in. Just 321 said no. Only 190 sat on the fence.

That’s not a debate. That’s a demand.

Now comes the real decision. Alonso must choose whether to unleash a battle-hardened veteran at his old ground, or hold him back a little longer after a freak injury and a disrupted pre-season.
