Crystal Palace Set for Europa League Debut with Key Players Returning
Crystal Palace step into Europe for the first time on Thursday night with a familiar pair finally edging back into view.
Ismaila Sarr, last season’s top scorer, and Eddie Nketiah are both in contention to make the matchday squad for the club’s historic UEFA Europa League debut against Lech Poznan at Selhurst Park, Pierre Sage has confirmed.

Sarr has not kicked a ball competitively this season. Injury has kept the winger out since the summer, stripping Palace of their most reliable finisher just as they prepared for a first European campaign.
Nketiah began the season as Sage’s starting centre-forward, leading the line in the opening three fixtures. Then he disappeared from the teamsheet, missing last week’s home games and leaving Palace light in attack.
Now, on the eve of a defining night for the club, both are back on the grass and pushing to be involved.
“He could be in the team tomorrow, as [could] Eddie Nketiah, because they started to train with us this week, and they are in shape,” Sage said, offering exactly the kind of update supporters wanted to hear.
The pair have trained fully this week and, by the manager’s account, looked sharp. For a side about to test itself on a new stage, that is no small boost.
Henderson out, but commits his future
Not every headline was about returns.
Dean Henderson remains unavailable, as does Jean-Philippe Mateta. Sage is targeting the period after the upcoming international break for both to come back into contention, a reminder that Palace’s squad is still not at full strength despite the attacking reinforcements.
Off the pitch, though, Henderson delivered the day’s biggest statement. Just before Sage faced the media, Palace announced their captain had signed a new long-term contract, tying him to the club until 2030.
“We are really happy for us, we are really happy for him – it's a long-term contract for our captain,” Sage said, underlining Henderson’s influence not only between the posts but in the dressing room.
The goalkeeper cannot help on Thursday night, but his commitment anchors the project Sage is trying to build.
A historic night at Selhurst
All of it feeds into the sense of occasion.
Palace have never been here before. A first-ever Europa League fixture, under the lights at Selhurst Park, against the Polish champions. The kind of night supporters have imagined for years.
Sage knows what it could mean. With Sarr’s pace, Nketiah’s movement and a crowd ready to turn the stadium into a cauldron, he has the tools to chase the “clinical edge” that has sometimes eluded his side.
The injuries, the new contract, the race to be fit – it all narrows to one question: can Crystal Palace mark their arrival in Europe with a statement that says they plan to stay?
