Ange Postecoglou Defends Cristiano Ronaldo After Al-Nassr's Heavy Defeat

Ange Postecoglou sprang to the defence of his captain Cristiano Ronaldo in a spiky exchange with a reporter after Al-Nassr were thrashed 4-0 by Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

The Saudi Pro League champions opened their AFC Champions League Elite campaign with expectations of a statement performance. Instead, they were taken apart, the heavy defeat abruptly halting the momentum of a promising start to the season.

Ronaldo, with three goals in six games so far, endured a frustrating night. He struggled to influence the contest and quickly became the lightning rod for criticism once the final whistle had gone.

The tension spilled into the press conference. According to English newspaper the Daily Mail, a Saudi reporter directly challenged Postecoglou, questioning whether Ronaldo’s continued presence in the starting XI was now holding Al-Nassr back. The journalist went as far as to claim that, while the Portuguese star was not a complete burden, he “does not benefit the team”.

Postecoglou didn’t let it slide.

“Cristiano has already scored three goals. His preparation period was limited. It is not about the players. The players are giving their all and they are top-class players with wonderful character,” he fired back, immediately shifting the spotlight away from his captain.

He made it clear where he believed the blame should lie.

“The responsibility falls on me, but you should not say that about someone who is still a role model for everyone,” he continued, his tone sharpening as he spoke in defence of the 39-year-old.

Postecoglou then widened his argument, turning the question back on the manner of the criticism itself.

“You have to be careful when you say things like this about people who have built their career on making every sacrifice to keep playing,” he said. “You can criticise me, no problem.”

The reporter refused to back down, insisting Ronaldo had not done “anything” in the match. That was the final straw.

“He did not do anything? You are watching a different match to me,” Postecoglou snapped, drawing a firm line under the exchange.

A bruising night on the pitch, a defiant stance off it – and an early sign that, for all the scrutiny around Ronaldo, his coach is not about to let him stand alone.
