Scott McTominay's Heart Surgery Declared a Complete Success

Scott McTominay’s heart surgery has been hailed “a complete success” by Napoli, with the club expecting the Scotland midfielder back in training before the month is out.

The 29-year-old underwent an ablation procedure on Tuesday morning at Spire Manchester Hospital, a minimally invasive operation used to correct irregular heart rhythms. The issue was picked up after he was taken off 56 minutes into Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on 30 August.

Further tests revealed a mild benign arrhythmia. The decision was made to act quickly, and Napoli have now been rewarded with the best possible news.

In a club statement, Napoli confirmed that McTominay will rest for two weeks before rejoining full training. The initial plan had been for the former Manchester United midfielder to return to action after the international break in early October, and that timeline remains in place.

McTominay himself struck a defiant tone when the heart problem was first made public, posting on Instagram: “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”

His recovery will be watched closely in Scotland as well as in Naples. New national team head coach Sebastien Pocognoli faces his first fixtures at the end of September and into early October, with a double-header against Slovenia and Nations League meetings with North Macedonia and Switzerland on the schedule.

According to the NHS, an arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or with an irregular rhythm. For McTominay, the danger has been dealt with early. Now the countdown begins to his return to the pitch.
