Ayyoub Bouaddi: Manchester City's Rising Star
Ayyoub Bouaddi has barely finished his teenage growth spurt, yet he already carries the kind of billing usually reserved for seasoned internationals. More than 100 senior competitive games behind him, a World Cup on his CV, and now a move to Manchester City. This is not a slow burn. This is a career launched at full throttle.
Born and built at Lille, Bouaddi tore through the French youth ranks, pulling on the France shirt from U16 all the way up to U21. Each step up looked natural, almost routine. Then came the twist. He chose Morocco, the country he now represents on the biggest stage of all, helping to light up the 2026 World Cup with the Atlas Lions.
By the time that tournament kicked off, his name was already circling every major recruitment meeting in Europe. Scouts knew him. Sporting directors knew him. The question was no longer whether he would leave, but who would convince him. The answer, inevitably, was one of the Premier League’s modern powerhouses.
City moved decisively. They paid big, bet big and backed their judgment that Bouaddi is one of the most coveted young midfielders in the game. For them, this is a long-term pillar, not a luxury signing.
Enzo Maresca has chosen to drip-feed him into the Premier League storm. Two appearances off the bench so far, brief but telling cameos, hinting at what is to come. Nobody inside the club is pretending he will stay a substitute for long. The expectation is clear: in time, his name goes on the team sheet first and stays there.
Bouaddi himself sounds like a player who knows exactly where he wants to go and what it will take to get there. Speaking to City’s official website as the move was confirmed, he did not bother to play down the scale of the step.
“Manchester City are, for me, the best club in the world. It’s a dream to be here and be able to call myself a City player. I have spent most of my life working hard to become the best player I can be and reach the top of the game.
“I’ve watched City for many years, and I love their style of play. City always try and play quality football. And they have shown they are winners – this club feels like it’s built to win. The squad is world-class and Enzo is a top manager. And I’m really looking forward to playing at the Etihad Stadium, in front of all the fans.
“I have plenty of improving to do. I am only 18. I am happy with the progress I have made so far, but I also know I can improve so much. This is undoubtedly the best place for me to do that. This club demands trophies and I will give everything to make sure we are challenging for every title.”
Those are not the words of a teenager simply happy to be there. They are the words of a player already thinking in terms of trophies, standards and legacy.
Inside the club, the excitement is just as sharp. Director of football Hugo Viana did not hide the scale of City’s belief in their new signing.
“Ayyoub’s potential is extremely high - a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs. At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of Enzo.
“We have watched him very, very closely and throughout that process we have become increasingly convinced he is a huge talent who will thrive at City. We are really happy he has joined us and our job now is to ensure we provide him with everything he needs to fulfil his potential.”
That is the crux of it. City see more than a promising youngster; they see a future leader of their midfield, a player with the brain to control games and the engine to dominate them.
For now, Bouaddi waits, learns and comes off the bench. The Etihad crowd is only getting glimpses. The club, though, is planning for the day when those glimpses turn into 90-minute statements and a teenager from Lille, now an Atlas Lion in sky blue, starts shaping the direction of entire seasons.
