Roma Targets Said El Mala Amidst Bundesliga Collapse
AS Roma have made their move. In a market short on top-class wide forwards, the Giallorossi have placed 19-year-old Said El Mala on their shortlist and, crucially, signalled they are willing to pay the full price.
According to Geissblog, Roma are prepared to meet 1. FC Cologne’s €50 million valuation of the left winger. It’s a bold stance, but not an isolated one: the club have already been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jean-Matteo Bahoya, with a fee of around €45 million discussed. The message from the capital is clear – they are ready to invest heavily in a young, high-upside attacker.
There is, however, one significant obstacle. El Mala himself.
Sky reports that the seven-time Germany Under-21 international does not currently see his immediate future in Italy. Roma may be ready to write the cheque, yet the player’s own ambitions and preferred path could drag the deal into a standstill before it truly starts.
Dortmund deal collapses amid anger in Cologne
If Roma sense an opening, it comes on the back of a collapsed move inside the Bundesliga.
A transfer to Borussia Dortmund, once considered a realistic next step for El Mala, now appears definitively off the table. Geissblog reports that Cologne found the financial package from Dortmund inadequate, but it was not just about the numbers.
What really infuriated the Effzeh hierarchy was how Dortmund allegedly went about their business. Cologne were, as quoted verbatim, “not in agreement with the manner in which Dortmund are said to have tried to influence the player in order to make a move more likely”. That line says plenty.
The reaction at the Geißbockheim was swift and uncompromising. Club officials internally agreed to cut off all negotiations with Dortmund immediately. No more talks, no revised bids, no second chances. For El Mala, one of Germany’s most prominent talent pathways suddenly closed.
Leipzig hesitate as the numbers bite
With Dortmund out, the field has thinned dramatically. Within the Bundesliga, only RB Leipzig are still mentioned as a potential destination.
Even there, the enthusiasm meets a hard ceiling. According to Geissblog, Leipzig have informed Cologne that they neither can nor want to match the €50 million asking price at this stage. For a club renowned for targeting emerging talent, the figure is simply too steep under current conditions.
A twist remains possible, but it hinges on one thing: sales. Specifically, the departure of Yan Diomande. Only if Leipzig generate significant income from a Diomande transfer would they have the resources to return seriously to the table for El Mala. Until then, their interest stays parked in the “admire from afar” category.
So Roma wait. Leipzig wait. Cologne, for now, hold the strongest hand.
El Mala answers on the pitch
Amid all the speculation, El Mala has done the one thing every young player must: perform.
In Thursday’s 8-0 pre-season win over Bergisch Gladbach, the 19-year-old found the net for the first time in the current campaign. It was only a friendly, but it underlined why clubs are circling and why Cologne feel justified in demanding a premium fee.
For Cologne, every goal, every bright performance strengthens their negotiating position. For Roma and Leipzig, each glimpse of his potential is a reminder that waiting too long can be costly in a market that moves quickly around players of this profile.
The money is clearly there. The talent is obvious. The question now is whether Said El Mala chooses the Eternal City, stays in Germany, or forces everyone to redraw their plans once again.
