Rio Ngumoha Set to Stay at Liverpool as Arsenal Miss Out

Arsenal went hunting for a left winger. Rio Ngumoha looks ready to slam the door.

Liverpool’s 18-year-old wide man has been on the Premier League champions’ radar as they search for a long-term answer on the left. Their attempts to land Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior in the summer went nowhere, and no direct replacement arrived after Gabriel Martinelli’s exit left a clear gap in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The expectation, as David Ornstein hinted when he said he “could see something happening” in January, was that Arsenal would return to the market. Ngumoha’s name quickly moved towards the top of that list.

Liverpool, though, have never sounded remotely willing to play ball.

Liverpool move to lock down their next star

TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract at Anfield. The framework is in place; the lawyers are now turning it into a full, binding deal.

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, there is little sense of jeopardy for Liverpool. The club want him to stay. The player wants to stay. And, crucially, he is “set to get regular starts this season” – the kind of promise that tends to end transfer sagas before they start.

“Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha,” O’Rourke explained, adding that both sides are optimistic of getting the contract signed. That pathway the club have laid out for him – minutes, responsibility, a clear route into the first team – has convinced the teenager his future should be painted in red.

For Arsenal, it is a familiar feeling. Another left-sided target drifting out of reach.

Clear message from Anfield

Fabrizio Romano has echoed the mood inside Liverpool. He described a club that has never wavered on Ngumoha, even when the noise around him grew louder in the summer.

There were “many rumours about Bayern Munich and more clubs,” Romano said, but Liverpool’s stance did not budge: Ngumoha was not leaving, not for sale, and central to their plans. “Rio is Liverpool’s future.”

Clubs have circled because they see what Liverpool see – one of the best young talents in his position. That interest is not going away. The door, however, remains firmly shut.

Romano was blunt: there was “not even a discussion or a negotiation” over a sale. Liverpool simply appreciated the player and moved to protect their asset.

Now Arsenal’s name has been dragged into the story. The logic is easy enough to follow. They replaced Leandro Trossard with Christos Tzolis, then watched Martinelli depart and chose to stick with what they had. The squad still looks one winger light, so eyes turn to opportunities. Ngumoha, inevitably, becomes one.

Arsenal wait. Liverpool act.

Romano believes that if a chance ever emerged – in 2027, 2028 or beyond – Arsenal would be in the queue. So would clubs from abroad. There will be “strong interest” in Ngumoha for years.

But that is the long game. The short game belongs to Liverpool.

Talks over a new contract are active. Specifics still need ironing out – guarantees over role, financial balance, all the usual pressure points in a modern elite deal – yet the direction of travel is obvious.

Ngumoha is buying into Liverpool’s vision. Liverpool are building around his talent. Arsenal, once again, are left scanning the horizon for the next winger who might actually be available.
