Olwethu Makhanya Joins Rangers from Philadelphia Union

Olwethu Makhanya has completed his move to Rangers from Philadelphia Union, becoming the club’s eighth signing of a busy summer rebuild.

The 22-year-old South Africa defender arrives at Ibrox on a four-year contract, with Rangers holding an option for an extra year, after an eye-catching spell in Major League Soccer where he made 53 appearances since breaking into the Union first team last year.

From Stellenbosch to Ibrox

Makhanya’s journey has been rapid. He emerged at Stellenbosch in South Africa, earned his move to MLS, then forced his way into the national picture quickly enough to be named in South Africa’s 2026 World Cup squad.

He did not feature at this summer’s finals, but his trajectory was clear enough for Rangers to move decisively.

The player himself made no attempt to hide what the move means to him.

"I can't even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can't wait to get started," he said, underlining the scale of the step in his career.

"For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true."

McInnes backs defender to handle the leap

Rangers manager Derek McInnes believes the raw materials are there for Makhanya to handle the demands of Scottish football and the scrutiny that comes with the Ibrox stage.

"He's got a lot of athleticism and good potential," McInnes said ahead of Rangers’ Scottish Premiership opener at Dundee United on Friday.

The leap from MLS to the Scottish Premiership can be unforgiving. Different tempo, different physical battles, different expectations. McInnes is under no illusions about that, but he is convinced the new signing is built for it.

"And while he's coming from the MLS, to a different country and a different type of football, we feel he's got the attributes that can cope with that."

Rangers have made a habit of betting on emerging talent this summer. Makhanya, with his blend of international recognition, American seasoning and South African grit, now walks into a dressing room where potential is expected to turn into performance – and fast.
