Chelsea Pursues Manu Koné Amid Enzo Fernandez's Potential Move to Man City

Chelsea’s midfield rebuild is accelerating, and the domino that could send Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City may already be tipping.

Chelsea have reached an agreement on personal terms with Manu Koné and are now locked in talks with Roma over a transfer for the 25-year-old midfielder, according to multiple reports.

FootballTransfers report that Chelsea have settled the player side of the deal and are “pushing” to bring in the AS Roma man before the window shuts. French journalist Santi Aouna backed that up, confirming that Chelsea have made official contact with Roma and that discussions between the clubs are ongoing.

The Blues have not been shy about their intent. Reporter Nico Schira claims Chelsea have already tabled a bid worth €65m (around £56m), though Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini is said to consider Koné “non-transferable”. Schira adds that the final call will rest with the midfielder himself and Roma owner Dan Friedkin.

Italian transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio paints a slightly different picture on the numbers but the same one on momentum. He describes the Koné deal as “advanced” and cites a fee in the region of £52m in his latest update while noting that Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is close to joining Roma on loan.

Either way, Chelsea are clearly closing in.

All of this points in one direction: Enzo Fernandez moving closer to Manchester City.

City are prepared to pay around £120m for the Argentina international, a fee that would make Fernandez both the most expensive signing in Manchester City’s history and the costliest midfielder the game has seen.

Fernandez is keen on the switch. Chelsea, for their part, are willing to sell – but only on their terms. Two conditions have been set: they want the full £120m and they want a replacement lined up and secured before they let him go.

That second demand explains the urgency around Koné. Chelsea have also looked at Monaco’s Lamine Camara, but over the past few days Koné has emerged as the leading candidate, with talks now at an advanced stage.

If Roma finally relent and accept a bid for Koné, Chelsea’s key requirement for sanctioning Fernandez’s departure will be met. At that point, the path for a record-breaking move to the Etihad would be wide open.

Chelsea’s midfield could be about to change shape again. The only question now is whether Roma and Koné are ready to pull the trigger – and, once they do, how quickly Manchester City move to finish the most expensive midfield transfer in history.
