Joe Bursik Returns to AFC Wimbledon on Loan

Joe Bursik has completed an emotional return to AFC Wimbledon, rejoining the club on loan from Championship side Portsmouth for the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper heads back to Plough Lane more than a decade after first pulling on a Wimbledon shirt as an eight-year-old in the academy. He left the Dons at 16 to join Stoke City, chasing a pathway into senior football. Now he comes back with experience, scars and a point to prove.

Bursik’s breakthrough spell came at Stoke in the 2020-21 campaign, when he kept seven clean sheets in 16 Championship appearances and briefly looked established at that level. His development then took him on a familiar goalkeeper’s journey: loans at Telford, Accrington, Doncaster and Peterborough, each stop adding games and resilience.

Portsmouth moved for him in September 2025, and he has since made 10 league appearances for Pompey. He also started one of the standout fixtures of his career so far, lining up against Arsenal in a 4-1 FA Cup third-round defeat at Fratton Park.

Now his story loops back to south-west London. For Wimbledon, it is a chance to plug a key position with a keeper who knows the club’s values. For Bursik, it is a return to where it all began, with the season ahead offering the stage to show how far that academy kid has come.
