Fabio Vieira Joins Hamburg After Arsenal Exit

Fabio Vieira’s Arsenal chapter is over. The Portuguese midfielder has completed a permanent move to Hamburg, with the Bundesliga club paying around 10m euros (£8.6m) to keep him in Germany.

The 26-year-old has effectively been edging towards this exit for two seasons. Arsenal sent him back to Porto on loan for the 2024-25 campaign, then on to Hamburg last term, where he did enough to convince the club to make the deal long term.

Vieira arrived in north London from Porto in 2022 as a technical, creative option for Mikel Arteta and went on to make 49 appearances for the Gunners. Flashes of quality were there, but he never fully nailed down a starting role in a squad packed with attacking midfielders.

Arsenal’s stance this summer has been clear: sell to reshape. Vieira was on the list of players available for permanent moves, and he will not be the only big name heading for the exit. Forwards Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli are also expected to leave on permanent deals as the club looks to refresh its attacking options and raise funds.

While established names move on, one of Arsenal’s brightest prospects is set to take his next step abroad. Academy graduate Ethan Nwaneri is close to sealing a loan move to Borussia Dortmund, a club with a reputation for giving young talent serious minutes at the highest level.

Vieira, meanwhile, swaps the Emirates for a city and a club where he has already settled. Hamburg have backed their belief in him with a significant fee. Arsenal have made their decision. The rebuild rolls on.
