Manchester United Pursue Manu Kone as Roma Faces Crucial Week
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is not slowing down. With Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans already through the door, attention has swung firmly towards Roma’s Manu Kone – and the next week is shaping up as a decisive one.
For months, Kone has kept the market at arm’s length. The 25-year-old asked his representatives at Excellence Sport Nation to park any serious talks until after the World Cup, determined to let his football do the negotiating. It worked. A strong tournament with France, where he has forced his way into the starting XI after not featuring for the national team last year, has pushed him to the front of the queue for clubs hunting a dynamic central midfielder.
United have already made their move. The club are understood to have approached Kone’s entourage, with his World Cup run ending in Saturday’s third-place play-off against England – the same stage at which Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford will bow out. Once that “bronze final” is out of the way, the real business begins.
Chelsea are in the frame too. The London club have been credited with an interest and are said to have raised Kone’s name with Roma during discussions involving Alejandro Garnacho. But the early positioning favours United. Reports in Italy suggest Kone is willing to sign for them, even if his ideal destination lies elsewhere.
That dream is Paris. Paris Saint-Germain, fresh from back-to-back Champions League titles, remain the midfielder’s preferred move. At this stage, though, a switch to the French champions is not on the table. With PSG seemingly out of the running, Corriere dello Sport describe United as frontrunners, with both Manchester United and Chelsea expected to formalise their interest in the coming days.
Roma, for their part, are ready to listen. The Serie A club are understood to want around £47 million for Kone, a fee that would represent a £34m profit and, crucially, ease significant financial pressure. Earlier this summer, UEFA fined Roma £5m for breaching targets set in their settlement agreement and for pushing their squad cost ratio beyond 70%. A major sale now would go a long way towards closing that chapter.
Gian Piero Gasperini's Comments
Gian Piero Gasperini has not hidden the reality. The Roma head coach, speaking to Radio Rai 1, laid out the constraints the club are working under this summer.
“The financial fair play conditions are never exactly precise or defined, they vary from team to team,” he said. “It’s undeniable that Roma know that we have to balance the budgets, which has been tough in recent years.
“I’d hoped that entry into the Champions League would have been enough, but budgets are important for clubs and must be respected. I think there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”
Clarity, in this case, almost certainly involves Kone.
Gasperini was fulsome in his assessment of the midfielder’s rise. “Kone had a great first half of the season, and then was out of action due to injury for a bit during the second half. He’s having a great World Cup.
“He didn’t play with the France national team last year, but now he’s been able to claim a starting spot. It shows his potential and the work he’s put in.”
That arc – from club standout, through injury frustration, to World Cup starter – is exactly what has caught United’s eye. Having already added the control of Tielemans and the energy of Santos, they are targeting a third central midfielder who can bridge both worlds: aggressive without the ball, progressive with it, and comfortable on the biggest stages.
Roma’s situation gives this chase an edge. This is not a leisurely saga that can drift into late August. Italian reports suggest that once Kone’s World Cup is over, a decision on his future will follow quickly, with “next week” repeatedly framed as a turning point.
United, Chelsea, Roma, Kone. One of them needs resolution more than the others. The club that moves first – and hardest – is likely to get him.
