Chelsea Secures Ahanor Loan to Crystal Palace
Chelsea have secured a deal for teenage defender Ahanor but will not see him in blue for almost three years, with Crystal Palace stepping in to benefit from an immediate loan.
Standard Sport revealed last week that Chelsea had reached an agreement for the 18-year-old to join the club, had settled personal terms and granted him permission to travel to London for a medical. The structure of the move has now taken shape — and it is an unusual one.
Instead of going straight into Chelsea’s squad, Ahanor will officially arrive at Selhurst Park on loan from Atalanta, before eventually joining Chelsea in the summer of 2027. Chelsea have opted to park the defender at Palace, adding another layer to their already complex loan network.
There is a twist behind that decision. Chelsea have already sent one player to Palace this summer, with Axel Disasi joining the Eagles on a season-long loan that contains no option or obligation to buy. Ahanor’s temporary switch will follow that path, giving Palace another defender while Chelsea lock in a long-term asset.
The teenager comes with serious pedigree. A product of the Genoa academy, Ahanor has already broken into the Italy senior side, earning two caps this year after making his debut earlier in the campaign. He featured 28 times in Serie A for Atalanta last season and made his Champions League bow in September, underlining why Premier League clubs have moved so aggressively for him.
While Chelsea plot the future around Ahanor, their midfield remains a live issue in the present.
The club are still tracking Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and are exploring a move for the 22-year-old, with uncertainty growing around Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine has now missed back-to-back Chelsea matches amid strong interest from Manchester City, raising fresh questions over his commitment and his future at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez was absent again for the wild 4-3 win over Brighton at the weekend. Asked to explain the omission, head coach Xabi Alonso pointed to the need for total focus inside the dressing room.
"We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game," Alonso said.
Chelsea are locking away tomorrow’s defenders while weighing up today’s midfield. Palace, in the meantime, get the benefit of Ahanor’s present — and a rare chance to shape a player who already belongs to someone else’s future.
