Juventus Signs Pape Matar Sarr from Tottenham for €30 Million
Juventus have struck a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to sign midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, in a move that could rise to €30 million and reshape both clubs’ midfields.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that the 23-year-old Senegal international will head to Turin on an initial loan with an option to buy. That option will not stay optional for long if things go to plan. It becomes an obligation if performance-related clauses are triggered, including Juventus qualifying for the Champions League and Sarr hitting specific appearance targets over the season.
This is not a move that came out of nowhere. Talks accelerated once Sarr made it clear he wanted a new challenge away from North London. Under Roberto De Zerbi, competition for minutes in Tottenham’s engine room has intensified after the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, squeezing Sarr’s role just as he enters what should be his prime years.
Monaco had been widely viewed as favourites to land him. That race did not last. Once Juventus stepped in, Sarr quickly agreed personal terms, drawn by the prospect of a central role in a midfield rebuild and regular Champions League football if the Bianconeri hit their targets.
For Juventus, this is a late-window correction. Several other midfield pursuits collapsed, forcing a rethink. Sarr fits the profile they lacked: high-energy, box-to-box, aggressive in the press and strong in ball recovery. He offers legs, range, and a different tempo in the middle of the pitch, exactly what a side aiming to reassert itself domestically and in Europe has been missing.
From Tottenham’s side, the deal carries clear logic. Letting Sarr go trims a congested midfield group and opens space for De Zerbi to shape the unit around his preferred options. If the clauses are met and the option becomes mandatory, Spurs also bank a sizeable fee that can be recycled into other areas of the squad.
Sarr leaves after more than 100 competitive appearances for Spurs, having joined from FC Metz in 2021. His time in North London brought flashes of the “talented” label that has followed him since France, but never quite the sustained starting role he craved.
With an agreement in place, Sarr has been cleared to travel to Turin for his medical and to sign his contract ahead of the transfer deadline. Juventus get their midfielder. Sarr gets his new stage.
Tottenham, meanwhile, are not done. They are pushing for another attacker before the window closes. Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye is the leading candidate, but Spurs face stiff resistance from Arsenal and Manchester City in a late-market tussle that could yet reshape the Premier League’s attacking landscape.
