Leny Yoro Shines in Manchester United's 4-0 Victory
Leny Yoro did not just get a start on Thursday night. He grabbed a stage.
Handed his first appearance in the XI this season, the 20-year-old slotted in alongside Lisandro Martinez at the heart of the defence and helped Manchester United cruise to a 4-0 win over Sabah in the Champions League, complete with a badly needed clean sheet. For a backline that has creaked in the league, this felt like a reset.
Yoro seizes his moment
Carrick has shuffled his centre-backs since the campaign began. Ayden Heaven opened with Martinez against Hull City. Harry Maguire then stepped in for the Premier League clashes with Ipswich Town and Everton. Yoro had been watching, waiting.
On the continental stage, he finally got his chance. He did not play like a stand-in.
Strong in duels. Calm on the ball. Composed when isolated one-vs-one. Yoro delivered the kind of performance that makes managers rethink their depth charts and senior players sit up.
Martinez certainly noticed.
“Amazing performance from Leny Yoro,” the Argentina international told reporters afterwards. “He played so well defensively, with the ball, being calm, being composed in every situation, one-vs-one.
“He’s the future of this club, honestly. And we have to help him, you know.”
That is not faint praise. That is a starting centre-back effectively planting a flag for the next generation.
Clean sheet relief amid domestic frustration
The irony is that United’s most assured defensive display of the season came in Europe, not in the Premier League. At home, they have been far too generous.
Two goals conceded in each of their league fixtures so far. The numbers sting, and the dressing room knows it.
Martinez did not hide his frustration when he reflected on the Everton game in particular.
“I think against Everton, I think we played to take the clean sheet, and then we conceded the goals, you know, and that’s what annoys us,” he admitted.
“It’s really bad, for sure, because we want to be there, and if we want to compete, we have to keep the clean sheet because it’s very important. But today we did it, and we have to build on that.”
Thursday’s shutout, then, was more than just a line in the stats column. It was a small statement that this defence can still lock the door when it gets its structure right.
A rising defender, a ruthless selection call
Yoro’s story at United has not been a straight climb. Under former boss Ruben Amorim last season, he forced his way into the side and finished with 18 Premier League starts, effectively establishing himself as a first-choice option for long spells. Then his minutes dipped in the autumn, his place no longer guaranteed.
Now, under Carrick, the battle restarts.
The manager is widely expected to lean on experience for the looming Manchester derby, pairing Martinez with Maguire in what is likely to be one of the defining fixtures of United’s early season. That is the safe call, the predictable one.
But Yoro has just complicated the picture.
After a flawless night against Sabah – no drama, no panic, no obvious weakness to target – he has given Carrick something every coach both craves and dreads: a real decision.
Go with the tried and trusted for the derby? Or reward the young defender who has just shown, under Champions League lights, that he belongs on this stage?
The answer will say plenty about how United plan to build their defence, not just for Sunday, but for the years to come.
