Arsenal's EFL Cup Challenge Against Ipswich Town: Squad Concerns
Arsenal’s perfect start to the 2026-27 campaign faces a new kind of examination on Tuesday night, as Mikel Arteta’s side step into a third competition with an EFL Cup trip to Ipswich Town.
Six games played across all fronts. Six wins. No defeats, no draws, no slip-ups. The latest was a controlled 2-0 victory over Sunderland in the Premier League, a match overshadowed by an “unacceptable” penalty decision but ultimately another tick in the win column.
The League Cup, though, has never been so kind. Arsenal’s relationship with this tournament remains strained, their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in last season’s final stretching a barren run in the competition that dates back to 1993. The trophy cabinet keeps its distance; the wait goes on.
Now comes Ipswich away, a potential trap against a side that has already shown its teeth with a 3-1 win over Leicester City in the second round. Arteta’s squad depth and resilience will be tested again, and the team sheet may be shaped by a handful of fitness concerns.
Ben White scare clouds defensive plans
The most immediate worry is Ben White. Ever-present so far this season, the defender was seen clutching his groin before being withdrawn at half time against Sunderland on Saturday night. No dramatic touchline treatment, no stretcher, but enough discomfort to raise alarms.
Arteta offered no concrete update after the game. Silence, in this context, says plenty. White is now a major doubt for the trip to Portman Road, and Arsenal must prepare as if they will be without one of their most reliable performers.
There is one timely boost. Jurrien Timber, himself just back from a groin issue, came through the entire second half at the Stadium of Light without incident. His clean bill of health softens the blow and gives Arteta an obvious option if White does not make it.
Mosquera pushing to return
On the opposite side of the spectrum sits Cristhian Mosquera, who has missed Arsenal’s last three matches after picking up a hamstring strain against Aston Villa.
The Spaniard’s rehab has moved at an encouraging pace. Arteta has said Mosquera is doing “really well” in his recovery, and crucially, he has not been ruled out of the third-round tie. That keeps the door ajar for a return, even if the medical staff tread carefully with muscle injuries this early in the season.
If Mosquera is passed fit, he adds another body – and more balance – to a back line already juggling minutes and workloads.
Saliba remains the long-term absentee
One name will not be on any teamsheet for some time yet. William Saliba continues his recovery from a long-standing back problem, a flare-up that dates back to the World Cup and has already cost him months of action.
The French centre-back is not expected back until at least November 21, when Arsenal face Newcastle United. Until then, Arteta must navigate league, Europe and now the EFL Cup without his defensive pillar.
No suspensions, but no margin for error
There is at least one area free of complication: Arsenal have no suspensions to contend with for this tie. Every available player is eligible.
So the picture is clear. An unbeaten Arsenal side, still scarred by last season’s final, walks into a competition that refuses to bend easily for them. Ipswich have already bloodied one higher-ranked opponent. The League Cup has tripped Arsenal up before.
