Leeds United Seek Perfect Start Against Brentford at Elland Road

Daniel Farke walks into his first home Premier League game of the season with momentum at his back and a serious opponent in front of him.

Leeds United have opened the campaign with two wins from two in all competitions and remain unbeaten, but on Sunday they face the side their head coach has called the standout team of the early weeks: Brentford. Farke wants his players “at their very best” to extend this start. He knows they will have to be.

Selection puzzles and timely returns

The treatment room has thinned out, but not emptied.

Mateo Joseph and Ilia Gruev are still sidelined with knee problems. Gruev, though, is edging closer, having now completed a second week back in team training and pushing towards a return to competitive action.

Out wide and at the back, there is cautious optimism. Gabriel Gudmundsson and Wilfried Gnonto both rejoined full training this week after separate thigh injuries. That is a boost, but with the quick turnaround Farke is wary. The club will wait to see how their bodies react before deciding whether either can be risked from the start.

If they are held back, Leeds are not short of alternatives across midfield and the defensive line. And crucially, Farke has little incentive to tinker for the sake of it.

A settled spine and a striker in form

Leeds have found early stability in the middle of the pitch. Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach are expected to continue as the double pivot in central midfield, a partnership that has underpinned clean sheets in both league fixtures so far. They screen, they snap into tackles, they set the tempo. It has worked.

Ahead of them, the form of Dominic Calvert-Lewin gives Leeds a focal point Brentford will have to respect. The centre-forward has scored in each of Leeds’ past two competitive games and again leads the line, with Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson offering support in the attacking band behind him.

With the system bedded in and results backing it up, there is no obvious reason to break up a winning side.
