Liverpool's Urgent Need for a Midfielder: Camara's Perfect Fit
Liverpool can see the solution. The clock is the problem.
They need a midfielder – urgently, obviously, painfully. Anyone who watched the draw at Newcastle United on Sunday didn’t need the data to spell it out. Liverpool’s midfield opened up again and again, offering barely a speed bump as Newcastle surged through the centre and ran straight at a rattled back line.
This isn’t a tactical quirk. It’s a hole.
Right now, Liverpool lack that one player who plants himself in the middle of the pitch, takes responsibility for the defensive graft and still has the quality to start attacks. None of their current options naturally occupy that role. They press, they shuttle, they create. They don’t anchor.
And yet, somehow, with days left in the window and options shrinking by the hour, Liverpool look ready to walk past a near-perfect answer.
Camara: The profile Liverpool are crying out for
Lamine Camara is not a mystery name. He’s 22, already proven over multiple seasons, and plays like a midfielder designed in a recruitment lab for a modern elite side.
Few players in Europe can shoulder a huge chunk of the defensive work and still regularly create chances. Camara sits in that tiny bracket. In fact, statistically, he basically owns it.
Across the top five leagues, he is the only midfielder projected for 25/26 who ranks in the top 10 per cent both for share of defensive workload and for creating big chances. The only one. At 22.
Look back a season and it becomes even more striking. The 24/25 numbers tell the same story: again, Camara stands alone in the top 10 per cent for both metrics. Two seasons, same outcome. High volume defensive work, high value chance creation. Repeatable, reliable, elite.
Strip away the jargon and it boils down to this: Camara does almost everything you want from a top-level midfielder to an above-average standard, and he is outstanding at the two things Liverpool most desperately lack – defensive presence and final-third incision.
For a club that prides itself on smart recruitment, this is as close to a sure thing as the market offers.
Chelsea move, Liverpool hesitate
And he’s on the market.
Foot Mercato and other outlets report that Chelsea are pushing ahead with a deal for Camara. Liverpool, crucially, have been offered the chance to get involved.
This is not a case of a dream target who is unavailable, unaffordable or locked into a long-term project elsewhere. Camara can be signed. Now.
Yet the indication is that Liverpool are prepared to let him go, to watch Chelsea move in while they turn to alternative targets – players who will almost certainly be harder to prise away at this stage of the window and, on paper, offer a worse fit.
It’s a baffling stance. Liverpool have spent the early weeks of the season showing exactly where they are vulnerable. The market has presented them with a 22-year-old who directly answers that weakness, with a two-year body of work to prove it.
If they step aside and allow Chelsea to close this deal, the question will linger every time their midfield is overrun this season: why did they walk away from the one player who ticked every box?
