Wayne Rooney knows exactly what it looks like when a teenage phenomenon slips through a club’s fingers. He was that kid once. Now he’s watching Manchester United fight – and possibly fail – to keep hold of another.
The 38-year-old has admitted it would be a “massive blow” for United to lose 15-year-old prodigy Gabriel, who has formally asked to leave Old Trafford despite the club’s efforts to keep him.
A wonderkid on the move?
Gabriel turns 16 next month. He is already on the radar of Europe’s superpowers. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are tracking his situation closely as his future hangs in the balance.
The buzz around him isn’t hype built on clips and whispers. The teenager announced himself on the European stage with a ruthless hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah, a performance that underlined why scouts have been flocking to watch him.
Rooney has seen that talent up close. Gabriel has come through the United youth ranks alongside Rooney’s son, Kai, and the former United striker has had a front-row seat for his rise.
“I have seen JJ grow up, he has been in [my son] Kai's team,” Rooney said on the Stick To Football podcast on Disney+. “Anyone close to it knew that was coming. In fairness to Manchester United they have done everything, absolutely everything, to keep him at the club.
“The club have treated him probably differently to the other players because he is such a special player. I know, I recognise that, because I was that player at Everton. I was getting that treatment at Everton.
“As a club, you need to do [it] to try to keep the better players. It's disappointing because he is such a top player and a lovely kid. You never know whether it's gone too far or whether there is a chance for him to stay.”
Rooney sees himself in Gabriel
Rooney’s words carry weight because he understands both sides of this story: the club desperate to protect its jewel, and the teenager staring at a fast-track to the elite.
He is adamant Gabriel has everything required to make it at the top level. What stands out to Rooney is not just the goals, but how the youngster handles himself against older, stronger opponents.
“He is a top player,” Rooney said. “His ability, his balance, he has shown he can go up the ages and score goals. The next step is first-team football where it's different, and you never know until you're in there.
“But he's such a special talent who understands the game really well. At some point this season he would [have] made his debut for the first-team, I'd imagine, so that's where it's disappointing.”
That last line stings for United. In Rooney’s eyes, Gabriel was on the verge of breaking through at Old Trafford. Now the club is scrambling to keep a player they believed would soon be stepping out at the Theatre of Dreams.
United fighting to keep their gem
Despite the transfer request, United have not given up. The hierarchy remain hopeful they can repair the relationship and persuade Gabriel that his future lies in Manchester. They have already gone out of their way to make him feel valued, as Rooney highlighted, and those efforts are unlikely to stop now.
If he does walk away, though, he will not be short of options. With Madrid and Barca circling, the path to La Liga is wide open for a teenager whose reputation is growing by the week.
