Go Ahead Eagles vs FC Groningen: Late Drama Ends in 1-1 Draw
Go Ahead Eagles walked off to applause and frustration in equal measure. A dominant performance, a late reward, and then a miss that will replay in Deventer minds for days. FC Groningen escaped De Adelaarshorst with a 1-1 draw and every drop of energy spent.
Willumsson stuns Deventer
The evening had started brightly for the hosts. Go Ahead Eagles pushed Groningen back early, snapped into duels and drove the ball into wide areas, forcing the visitors to defend deep.
Then Groningen landed a punch out of nowhere.
Brynjólfur Willumsson picked up the ball on the edge of the box and did not hesitate. One touch to set, one vicious strike. His shot tore past goalkeeper Kjetil Haug and flew into the net for 0-1, completely against the flow of the game.
De Adelaarshorst fell briefly silent. Go Ahead had been on the front foot; Groningen suddenly had the lead and something to cling to.
Tengstedt leads the chase
The goal only sharpened the home side’s intent. Groningen retreated, lines compact, content to absorb pressure and play on rare breaks. Go Ahead, with more of the ball and more ambition, needed a spark.
Søren Tengstedt provided it.
The striker constantly found pockets between the lines, turning and driving at the Groningen defence. He almost levelled with a clever, looping lob that seemed destined to drop in, only for Etienne Vaessen to spring back and claw it away with an outstanding save.
That moment summed up the half: Go Ahead probing, Tengstedt threatening, Groningen hanging on and grateful for their goalkeeper.
Pressure finally breaks Groningen
After the interval, Joseph Oosting’s team came out with even more edge. The tempo rose. Crosses flew in, combinations sharpened around the box. Chances followed.
Thibo Baeten went close. Stefan Ingi Sigurdarson had sights of goal. Groningen, legs tiring, continued to block, scramble and survive. The visitors were under siege, but the scoreboard refused to budge.
Until the 82nd minute.
Go Ahead sliced through the middle with a flowing move, and this time Tengstedt would not be denied. He burst into space and drilled his finish past Vaessen for 1-1, a strike hit with certainty and anger. His fifth goal of the season, and it put him out on his own as the Eredivisie’s current top scorer.
The stadium erupted. The equaliser felt overdue, and suddenly the home side sensed much more than just a point.
The miss that changed the night
Groningen were out on their feet. Go Ahead smelled blood and threw everything forward in the closing minutes. Every second ball was theirs, every attack aimed straight at a winner.
It should have come.
A low ball flashed across goal, and there was Sigurdarson with the chance every striker wants: the net gaping, the goalkeeper beaten, 2-1 at his feet. Somehow, incredibly, he steered the ball wide of the post.
Hands on heads. Disbelief on the pitch and in the stands. Groningen, stunned but relieved, clung to the draw.
The whistle eventually ended a fierce contest with the points shared. On paper, 1-1. In reality, two very different emotions: Go Ahead Eagles left with a sour taste after doing almost everything right, and FC Groningen grateful that on this night, they had nothing more to give and just enough to take.
