IUP Women’s Soccer Settles for Draw Against Clarion
INDIANA, Pa. – IUP had the ball, the chances, and the territory. Clarion had the ruthlessness. In the end, they split the difference.
Despite dominating almost every attacking metric, the IUP women’s soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Clarion on Saturday afternoon at South Campus Field, rescued by a second-half surge and a relentless performance from forward Kat Morgan.
Morgan drives IUP comeback
Morgan set the tone early. In the ninth minute, she slipped into space and buried the opener after a neat assist from Melody Leiva, handing the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 lead and early control.
That control didn’t last.
Clarion hit back just six minutes later. In the 15th minute, Leah Deal punished IUP’s back line with the Golden Eagles’ first real look at goal, leveling the match at 1-1. The visitors then flipped the game on its head in the 30th minute when Sofia Barba struck to make it 2-1, sending IUP into halftime trailing despite having most of the ball.
By the break, it felt harsh. By full time, it felt downright cruel.
One-way traffic after halftime
IUP came out after the interval with purpose and a higher tempo. Clarion barely escaped their own half for long stretches. The numbers tell the story: the Crimson Hawks outshot Clarion 8-0 in the second half and finished with a 14-3 advantage overall. All six corners in the match went to IUP.
The pressure finally told in the 74th minute. Morgan, who had been a constant threat, struck again to pull IUP level at 2-2, completing her brace. She finished the afternoon with four shots, every one of them on target.
Clarion never found a third. They hardly found the ball.
Sherk stands tall as Clarion hangs on
For all of IUP’s attacking waves, Clarion’s resistance held, anchored by goalkeeper Sage Sherk. She finished with seven saves as IUP repeatedly tested the Golden Eagles’ back line but couldn’t find a winner.
Leiva, busy and inventive throughout, added three shots to her earlier assist. Ayla Cook and Charlotte De Keukelaere each recorded two shots, while Zoe Ans-Bitchoka and Avery Clanton also forced Sherk into action with efforts on frame.
At the other end, IUP junior goalkeeper Sarah Gatz played the full 90 minutes. Clarion managed just two shots on goal all afternoon — and scored with both.
What the draw means
The result leaves IUP at 1-2-3 overall and 1-2-2 in PSAC play, a record that doesn’t quite match the control they showed for long stretches on Saturday. Clarion, efficient and stubborn, moves to 3-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference action.
For the Crimson Hawks, the performance suggested they can dictate games. The question now is whether they can start turning that dominance into wins before the season’s window starts to close.
