Diomande Challenges Vinicius at Real Madrid

A slow, uneven opening to the campaign from Vinicius has opened a crack in the door. Diomande is pushing it wider with every appearance.

That sense sharpened during Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Elche, a match that exposed both the Brazilian’s current struggles and Diomande’s rise.
A wild night in Elche – and a new contender
For half an hour, it looked routine. Real Madrid went 2-0 up and seemed to be strolling. Then the game turned.
Elche fought back, dragged themselves level, and suddenly the European giants were clinging on. Only Carlos Espi’s stoppage-time winner spared them a damaging result.
Amid that chaos, one contrast stood out. Diomande caught the eye; Vinicius did not.

Diomande attacked with purpose, carried the ball aggressively, and adapted seamlessly when switched between flanks. Vinicius, by comparison, struggled to leave a mark on the contest, his influence fading as the minutes ticked by.
Journalist Tomas Roncero underlined what many inside and outside the club are beginning to see: real competition for Vinicius’ place.
“Beware of the threat posed by Diomande, who played well on the right today and even better on the left,” Roncero warned, pointing directly to the youngster’s versatility and impact.
He then turned the spotlight back on the Brazilian.
“I've said it, and I suppose Vinicius's people will be angry as always because here, no matter how much affection you show someone, they don't realise that at Real Madrid, when someone isn't playing so well, you have to say so, otherwise it wouldn't be Real Madrid.”
In other words, reputation buys you time, not immunity.
Mourinho’s dilemma on the horizon
The numbers tell their own story. One goal and three assists in seven appearances across La Liga and the Champions League is not disastrous. It is not a disappearance. It is, however, a step below the explosive standard Vinicius has set in recent seasons.
Jose Mourinho has publicly kept faith. The coach believes the forward’s best version will return once he finds rhythm in front of goal again. For now, that trust still holds.
But Diomande is changing the landscape.
The young winger has shown he can tilt games, not just fill minutes. His display against Elche reinforced the idea that he is ready for more than cameo roles. He is not just a rotation option; he is a genuine candidate to start.
That shifts the pressure squarely onto Vinicius. He has promised to respond, to work, to sharpen his finishing and rediscover that trademark explosiveness. He will need to, quickly.
Because if he does not, a spell on the bench would not necessarily signal that Mourinho has lost faith. At Real Madrid, it would simply be a reminder of the club’s oldest truth:
