Chelsea’s late scramble to replace Enzo Fernandez ended in frustration. For Monaco’s Mohamed Camara, it may turn out to be the making of him.
Chelsea’s deadline drama collapses
In the final hours of the summer window, Chelsea locked onto Camara as their answer to Enzo’s departure. The deal was lined up: a £47 million fee agreed, a 22-year-old midfielder identified as the priority signing, and Xabi Alonso expecting his new man to walk through the door at Stamford Bridge.
Then Monaco walked away.
Right at the deadline, the principality club abruptly pulled the plug, leaving Chelsea short in midfield and Camara still in red and white. What looked like a career-changing move vanished in a phone call.
From failed move to Monaco mainstay
Since that collapse, Camara has not sulked. He has seized his chance.
The Senegal international has nailed down a place in Monaco’s starting XI, playing every minute of their opening Europa Conference League games. He scored in a 3-2 win over Gornik Zabrze and has featured in all five Ligue 1 fixtures, driving a side that currently sits top of the table.
The supposed consolation prize has turned into a starring role.
Team-mate Denis Zakaria, who knows Chelsea better than most, watched Camara dominate in a recent victory over Lens and admitted he had tried to steer him away from his old club.
“Chelsea? I told him that it was good but that it is better here,” Zakaria told reporters. He described Camara as “very professional” and insisted the whole transfer saga has only hardened the midfielder’s mentality. “He was incredible today,” the Swiss international added.
Camara turns the page
If Camara felt any lingering frustration, he is not showing it.
“There was a possibility I could leave,” he said before a recent draw with Strasbourg. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season. I can help the team a lot.”
He knows how quickly the market moves.
“Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”
His performances suggest that focus is real. His price tag, and his list of admirers, are only heading one way.
Chelsea not done yet – but Liverpool arrive
Chelsea, though, have not walked away.
Transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio insists the London club still view Camara as the ideal piece to plug the gap left by Fernandez.
“Will Chelsea renew their interest in Camara? I think so because everything changed for Camara at the last minute,” Di Marzio said. “Chelsea needs a player in that position after Enzo left, so I think that in January, they will try again. Obviously, it’s difficult to say right now if something will be arranged or not. Chelsea will be coming back again.”
This time, they might not be alone at the table.
Di Marzio claims Liverpool are also tracking Camara as they weigh up the contract situation of Alexis Mac Allister and look to reinforce their midfield before the summer. If Chelsea are hunting a replacement and Liverpool are planning ahead, the battle lines for January are already being drawn.
Monaco brace for a winter fight
All of that leaves Monaco in a powerful but precarious position. Top of Ligue 1, thriving in Europe, and with a 22-year-old midfield enforcer in the form of his life, they know what is coming.
Premier League money. Premier League pressure.
The French club will brace for a barrage of offers once the window reopens. Every strong performance from Camara between now and January only strengthens their hand and inflates his valuation.
Chelsea are desperate to complete Alonso’s rebuild. Liverpool are determined not to get caught short in midfield. Camara, suddenly, looks like one of the most coveted players in Europe heading into the winter market.
