Calum Scanlon Set for Loan Move to Cardiff City
Calum Scanlon is edging towards the exit door at Anfield again – but only temporarily.
The 21-year-old left-back, who impressed on Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States, is close to sealing a loan move back to Cardiff City for the 2026/27 campaign, according to a report from Simon Jones in the Daily Mail.
From US audition to Welsh return
With several of Liverpool’s senior regulars missing the American leg of pre-season after their World Cup exertions, Andoni Iraola turned to youth. Scanlon was one of those who grasped the chance.
He featured in all three games Stateside against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds, clocking just under 90 minutes in total. It wasn’t a starring role, but it was tidy, composed, and assured enough to remind people why he has long been highly rated inside the club.
Yet the pathway to minutes at Anfield this season looks brutally congested. Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas sit ahead of him in the left-back hierarchy, and competitive opportunities were always likely to be sparse.
So the solution is clear: play elsewhere, grow, come back stronger.
Cardiff push to bring him back
Cardiff know exactly what they are getting. Scanlon spent the second half of last season with the Bluebirds, making eight appearances and contributing to their promotion back to the Championship.
That short spell clearly left a mark. Brian Barry-Murphy’s side have been “working hard” to bring him back to the Welsh capital, with the club pushing to get a deal over the line. The defender has not been short of admirers either, with several enquiries lodged and a “concerted effort” from Sheffield Wednesday to tempt him away.
Cardiff, though, look to be winning that race.
For Scanlon, it would mean a return to familiar surroundings, a dressing room that already knows him, and a club riding the momentum of promotion. For a young defender trying to rebuild rhythm and confidence, that combination is gold.
A career that needs rhythm, not promises
Scanlon’s story over the past couple of years has been shaped by what he hasn’t been able to do as much as what he has. He hasn’t played a competitive game for Liverpool’s first team since two Europa League appearances in late 2023, his progress repeatedly stalled by serious injuries.
Those setbacks arrived just as his trajectory seemed to be steepening. Jurgen Klopp, who handed him those European minutes, once called him “fun to watch” – a simple line that underlined how highly the former manager viewed his potential.
That potential is still there. It just needs a season without interruption.
A loan back to Cardiff offers exactly that kind of platform. Regular Championship football, a manager who wants him, a system he already understands. No guarantees, of course – he will still have to fight for his place – but the route to meaningful minutes is far clearer than it would be behind Kerkez and Tsimikas at Anfield.
If the deal goes through and the injuries finally relent, this year in South Wales has the feel of a turning point. Not a step away from Liverpool, but a step towards proving he belongs in the conversation again.
