Valles' Heroics Lead Real Betis to Stunning Win Over Real Madrid
SEVILLE, Spain — Kylian Mbappé paused, dipped his shoulder and rolled into that familiar stutter-step. One clean strike to the bottom corner, and Real Madrid would escape with a point.
Álvaro Valles had other plans.
The Real Betis goalkeeper hurled himself low to his right, smothered Mbappé’s stoppage-time penalty and, with it, sealed a stunning 1-0 win at La Cartuja on Friday night — Madrid’s first defeat since José Mourinho returned to the dugout.
Valles didn’t just save a penalty. He stole the show.
Valles’ night of defiance
From the opening minutes, Madrid’s stars kept running into the same green-and-white wall. Valles produced a superb early stop, springing to his left to claw away a Jude Bellingham header that looked destined for the corner. It set the tone.

“We were sure we had it, but of course you also need a bit of luck,” Valles said of reading the spot kick. “He is very good at trying to make you commit early and not showing you where he is aiming. I was fortunate to stop it.”
Fortunate or not, it was the defining image of the night.
Parrott strikes, Mbappé stumbles
The drama at the end almost overshadowed the moment that put Betis in front.
With 81 minutes gone and Madrid still searching for a breakthrough, Troy Parrott pounced. The forward found the opening that Madrid’s forwards had been chasing all evening, striking what proved to be the only goal of the game and sending Betis within touching distance of a famous win.
From there, the champions of Europe threw everything forward.
Yet Mbappé never quite found his usual ruthless edge. His penalty wasn’t his only regret. In the first half, Vinícius had carved Betis open and drawn Valles out of position, squaring for Mbappé with the goal gaping.
