Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s quiet dream of putting Harry Kane in a Manchester United shirt is on the brink of being crushed – by the one thing Old Trafford can’t compete with right now: certainty.

United’s new co-owner is a long-time admirer of the England captain and, according to multiple sources, would jump at the chance to build his attack around the Bayern Munich striker. With Kane out of contract at the end of the season, the scenario looked tempting. Too tempting, perhaps, for a club still searching for a reliable, world-class No 9.

United, as revealed back in August by TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, are among the clubs who have been monitoring Kane’s situation and were willing to consider a move for the former Tottenham Hotspur talisman. Ratcliffe, a self-confessed fan, sees Kane as exactly the kind of elite, ready-made leader to fast‑track United’s rebuild.

But the timing is turning against them.

Bayern, fully aware of what they have, are moving to shut the door. The German champions are ready to put a new three-year contract on the table for the 33-year-old, tying him down well beyond 2026 and effectively removing him from the market for the foreseeable future.

And in Germany, the noise is that it’s only a matter of weeks before everything becomes official.

According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, speaking on his CFBayernInsider platform, Bayern are relaxed – bordering on confident – about Kane’s future. The forward was recently named “football star of the year” at the Sport Bild Awards, joining the ceremony via Zoom while his father, Pat, attended in person at the Fischauktionshalle in Hamburg.

Falk revealed he spoke directly with Bayern president Herbert Hainer about the situation and came away with a clear impression: the club believe an agreement is coming.

“Everyone was saying, ‘relax’; everyone thinks a new contract will just be a matter of time,” Falk reported, adding that only a few contract details still need ironing out and that the mood inside the club is overwhelmingly positive about getting it done.

The expectation in Munich is that an announcement on Kane’s future will arrive next month – and crucially, “absolutely this year, not next year”. Falk is “really sure” Kane will sign an extension that runs beyond 2026, a deal that would lock him in as Bayern’s long-term spearhead and close the door on any late moves from England.

For United, that is the brutal takeaway.

Once the new contract is signed, the England striker will be off the market “for a long time”, Falk stressed, even offering a pointed apology to Kane’s “long-time admirers, Manchester United”.

Ratcliffe and United may still scour Europe for a marquee centre-forward, but the most obvious, most Premier League‑ready option looks set to stay in Bavaria. And if Kane does commit his peak years to Bayern, the question for United is simple: where do they turn next for the kind of guaranteed goals he would have brought to Old Trafford?
