Bowdoin Falls to Colby in Season Opener Despite Strong Goalkeeping
Brunswick, Maine – One moment of quality in the second half was enough to separate the rivals.
Colby opened its season with a 1-0 road win over Bowdoin on Friday night, the Mules riding a sustained attacking performance and a single, well-worked goal to a NESCAC victory at Pickard Field. Colby moves to 1-0-0 overall and in conference play, while Bowdoin drops to 0-1-0 (0-1-0 NESCAC).
Colby Sets the Tone Early
From the opening whistle, Colby dictated the tempo.
The Mules pinned Bowdoin deep, moving the ball quickly and firing at will. By halftime, the shot count told the story: 15-1 in Colby’s favor. Wave after wave of pressure forced the Polar Bears to defend for long stretches, with little chance to build anything going forward.
The only reason the scoreboard stayed level was Ilana Posner.
Making her first start for Bowdoin, the senior goalkeeper turned the first 45 minutes into a personal showcase. She produced five saves before the break, cutting out crosses, smothering low drives, and keeping Colby’s front line frustrated despite their dominance in possession.
Breakthrough at Last
The resistance finally cracked in the 55th minute.
Colby’s Ella Caraluzzi burst down the left flank, carving out space and driving into the attacking third. Her low, centered ball found Abagail Jarvi in front of goal, and Jarvi did the rest, steering her finish into the back of the net for the decisive 1-0 lead.
The goal jolted Bowdoin to life.
The Polar Bears immediately pushed higher, pressing Colby’s back line and committing more numbers forward. For the first time all night, the hosts began to ask real questions in the attacking third, forcing the Mules to defend their advantage rather than simply hunt for a breakthrough.
Gardner Holds Firm, Posner Shines
Colby goalkeeper Sadie Gardner met that response with composure.
Bowdoin’s renewed urgency created half-chances and dangerous moments around the box, but Gardner and the Mules’ defense refused to yield. Every cross was contested, every loose ball cleared, as Colby protected its narrow lead.
On the other end, Posner continued to stand tall. By full time, she had piled up a career-high nine saves in her Bowdoin debut, a standout performance on a difficult night that kept the Polar Bears within striking distance until the final whistle.
Colby finished with a 10-2 edge in shots on goal, underlining their attacking control. Bowdoin did carve out a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, a sign of the territorial improvement that came only after falling behind.

The Polar Bears return to Pickard Field on Wednesday, September 9, hosting Saint Joseph’s College of Maine at 7 p.m. A sharper start and the same level of goalkeeping from Posner could quickly turn a frustrating opener into a springboard.
