Arsenal Miss Out on Malick Fofana as Sunderland Seals Deadline Day Deal
Arsenal’s late push for attacking reinforcements has been dealt a major blow, with Malick Fofana set for a shock move to Sunderland after the Gunners refused to meet Lyon’s demands.
Mikel Arteta’s side had moved for the 21-year-old winger at the start of the week, opening talks with Lyon as they searched for depth on the flanks. Fofana was viewed as a key Deadline Day target, a player who could arrive and immediately bolster a left side that has been stripped back over the summer.
The interest was serious. Reports from Santi Aouna and David Ornstein outlined how Arsenal entered negotiations, while Fabrizio Romano detailed that Fofana had even held talks with Arteta and was keen on a switch to north London.
Then came the sticking point: the fee.
Lyon were looking for around €40 million. Arsenal, according to those same reports, drew a line. They would not go that high. That hesitation opened the door, and a Premier League rival walked straight through it.
Sunderland moved decisively. The club agreed a deal worth €30 million plus add-ons, a package that can climb closer to Lyon’s original valuation and one that the French side were prepared to accept. With that, Arsenal’s pursuit effectively ended.
Instead of boarding a flight to London, Fofana will head to the north east for a medical ahead of a move few would have predicted at the start of the window. For Arsenal, it is a miss that stings.
The context makes it worse. On the left flank, Arsenal are running light. Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli have both been allowed to leave this summer, trimming Arteta’s options in a key area of the pitch.
The club have not stood still entirely. Christos Tzolis has already arrived from Club Brugge earlier in the window, adding one wide option to the squad. Ethan Nwaneri, however, is set to undergo a medical at Borussia Dortmund ahead of a loan move, another young attacker stepping out rather than in.
Crystal Palace know this dance as well. Earlier in the summer, the Eagles had pushed hard for Fofana and were close to an agreement with Lyon, only for the player to turn down a move to Selhurst Park. He waited. Arsenal appeared. Then Sunderland struck.
For Arteta and Arsenal’s hierarchy, the Deadline Day narrative has flipped: from the possibility of landing a highly rated young winger to watching him join another Premier League club while their own left side grows thinner by the week.
The question now is simple and unforgiving: with the window closing and a title challenge to maintain, who fills the gap that Fofana was supposed to cover?
