Manchester City Nears Agreement for Enzo Fernandez Transfer
Manchester City have struck an initial agreement with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernandez, with the World Cup-winning midfielder now racing the clock to seal a dramatic deadline-day move.
City only opened direct talks with Chelsea on Monday, according to British outlet The Sun, but negotiations accelerated quickly as the window ticked towards its 11pm local time closure. The deal is now described as being close to completion in the final hours of the market.
The move would reunite Fernandez with Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea head coach who took over from Pep Guardiola at the Etihad in the summer. The 25-year-old has made no secret in the past of his admiration for Maresca’s work and methods.
Now he needs everything to fall into place – fast. Agreement between the clubs has been reached at an initial level, as confirmed by respected journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, and Fernandez is waiting for the final green light to undergo his medical and complete the switch to the Premier League champions.
Silence at Chelsea, urgency at City
While City push to finalise the transfer, Chelsea have kept their cards close to their chest. Fernandez was left out of the squad for Sunday’s clash with Brighton, a decision that only fuelled speculation over his future.
Manager Xabi Alonso refused to be drawn when asked if Fernandez had already played his last game for the club.
“We’ll see. We want what's best for the team, which is why we made the decision against Luton and today, and anything that happens before Tuesday evening, we need to be aware of how things will develop,” he said.
Alonso stressed that Chelsea are braced for late twists in the market.
“We're not sure, we're preparing for all scenarios, but I'm certain that whatever happens from Wednesday, we'll have a good enough squad to compete in all the Premier League matches,” he added.
Those words did little to cool the noise. If anything, they underlined that Chelsea are open to movement, provided they feel protected for the rest of the campaign.
A reunion with a coach he defended
For Fernandez, the prospect of linking up again with Maresca adds another layer to the story. When Chelsea dismissed Maresca back in January, the Argentine publicly criticised the decision, making clear how much the coach’s departure had stung the dressing room.
“I don't understand it,” he told Mexican network TUDN at the time. “Sometimes there are things we don't understand as players, and how and in what way they try to manage matters.”
He did not stop there. “Clearly it was a departure that hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season, as it cuts everything off suddenly,” Fernandez said.
“We had an identity. He gave us a system, although according to the nature of football, things are sometimes good and sometimes bad. But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing.”
Those comments now read like a prelude. A player who felt a project was cut short may be about to step back into the orbit of the coach he believed gave his team structure and clarity.
The clock is ticking
For City, adding a 25-year-old World Cup winner at the heart of midfield would be a powerful statement at the end of a window in which they have had to reshape under a new manager. For Chelsea, it would mean cashing in on a major asset while trusting Alonso’s conviction that his squad can still compete on all fronts.
All that stands between Fernandez and Manchester now is time – medical tests, signatures, and the final paperwork before the window slams shut. If the last pieces fall into place, Maresca will get his man, and Fernandez will get the reunion he once thought had been taken away from him mid-season.
