Arijon Ibrahimovic's Surprise Shift to Augsburg
Two months ago, FC Bayern were talking about Arijon Ibrahimovic as part of their future. Now he is scoring goals at the top of the Bundesliga table – in the colours of FC Augsburg.
On 7 July, the German record champions announced the 20-year-old’s contract extension with a clear message. “Now it is no longer just about learning for him – now it is about making an attack, here at FC Bayern!” declared sporting director Christoph Freund, smiling into the club camera. The plan sounded simple: Ibrahimovic would stay, grow, and finally push his way in.
Reality moved faster.
From “attack at Bayern” to Augsburg’s spearhead
Ibrahimovic now has one Bundesliga appearance and one goal to his name this season. He is joint-leader in the table with two wins from two. Only, he is doing it for Augsburg, not Bayern.
The twist came quickly. The attacking midfielder, who has already been sent out on loan several times, had just spoken publicly about his joy at “getting the chance to play for the biggest club in the world.” Bayern had earmarked him as back-up to the tireless Luis Diaz, a role that seemed to guarantee at least some meaningful minutes.
Then the tone changed.
Shortly before deadline day, sporting boss Max Eberl sat in front of the microphones and opened a door that Ibrahimovic and his camp did not expect. “If there is something there that is ready to be announced, that could be interesting for both parties, then we would be open to that again,” he said. Suddenly, the player who had just been renewed and talked up was back on the market.
Confusion and irritation behind the scenes
How much Ibrahimovic himself pushed for a move remains murky. Officially, Bayern framed it as a joint decision. On 1 September, Freund explained in a press release that they had “reached an agreement with Arijon that it is best for his development if we loan him out for another season.”
Reports from Germany paint a different emotional picture. According to Sport1, Ibrahimovic was “extremely irritated” by the U-turn. His agent, Roman Rummenigge, reportedly felt “blindsided” by Eberl’s uncoordinated public hint that a move was back on the table. From their perspective, there had been no sporting reason to suddenly change course. The internal signals up to that point had suggested a genuine chance of game time in Munich.
Werder Bremen also came knocking, but Augsburg moved more decisively. FCA not only secured Ibrahimovic on loan until the end of the season, they also negotiated an option to buy worth eight million euros. Bayern insist they will keep a close eye on him. “He is still a young player with great attributes, and he needs regular match practice at this stage. He will get that at FC Augsburg, and we will continue to support him closely along the way,” said Freund.
Between the lines, the question lingers: did Bayern simply judge that he is not yet at the required level?
From criticism in pre-season to liftoff in Augsburg
The backdrop to Bayern’s change of heart is not fully clear. What is clear is that Ibrahimovic did not help himself in pre-season. He missed several big chances, drew repeated criticism from parts of the fanbase, and some supporters doubted whether he possessed the necessary class for decisive moments in big games.
That was the mood when the club veered away from their July message and steered him towards another loan.
In Augsburg, the story has started very differently.
Coach Manuel Baum wasted no time. Ibrahimovic went straight into the starting XI for his first match and marked the occasion with a goal in a 4-1 win away at Eintracht Frankfurt. FCA looked sharp, aggressive, and fearless. Their new loanee played his part and more, offering exactly what Bayern claimed he needed: rhythm, responsibility, real pressure.
For now, the abrupt departure from Säbener Straße has turned into an opportunity. Ibrahimovic is playing, scoring, and winning – just not where Bayern thought his “attack” would begin.
