Manchester United Returns to Champions League: Facing Sabah FK
Manchester United’s wait is over. After three years in the wilderness, the club is back under the Champions League lights.
Old Trafford will stage the return on Thursday, Sept. 10, when Azerbaijani side Sabah FK arrive for their first-ever game in the group phase of Europe’s elite competition. For United, it is a familiar stage. For Sabah, it is uncharted territory.
For Michael Carrick, it is a headache.
Carrick’s Balancing Act
The United manager walks a tightrope this week. He has to set a team strong enough to make a statement in Europe, yet keep enough fuel in the tank for the derby against Manchester City on Sunday, Sept. 13. One misstep, and either the Champions League opener or the domestic showdown could suffer.
He will have to do it without a sizeable chunk of his squad.
Matthijs de Ligt (back), Manuel Ugarte (knee), Carlos Baleba (ankle), Amad Diallo (ankle) and Tom Heaton (hamstring) are all ruled out. Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford are doubts and face a race against time to prove their fitness.
The absences strip away some of United’s depth, but not their star power. Carrick still has enough quality to field a side expected to dominate a Sabah team taking its first steps at this level.

Higher up, the creative responsibility naturally falls on Bruno Fernandes, flanked by Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who can both drift into pockets or stretch the pitch. At the tip, Benjamin Šeško provides a focal point and a threat in behind.
Sabah arrive without Champions League pedigree. United return with scars, expectations and a point to prove.
For Carrick, this is more than a team sheet. It is the first big call of a European campaign that will define how far this new-look United can really go.
