Ronald Araujo's Champions League Aspirations with Liverpool and Barcelona

Ronald Araujo walked off the Anfield pitch having just helped Liverpool edge past Atletico Madrid 2-1, but his thoughts were not only on the red shirt he currently wears.

On loan from Barcelona, the Uruguayan centre-back admitted he still tracks every step his parent club takes – and he likes what he sees.

Speaking to "Movistar Liga de Campeones" after a commanding display, Araujo did not dodge the question when Barcelona’s Champions League prospects came up. He went straight for it.

"Definitely, Barcelona are among the leading contenders to win the Champions League," he said. "They are performing brilliantly."

There was no hint of distance in the way he spoke about the Catalan side. Just attachment. And pride.

"I follow them. I am very happy for my team-mates," he explained. "They have a great side. I always support them, and I am very grateful for what they are achieving now."

Those words landed on the back of a standout performance in Liverpool colours under Andoni Iraola. Araujo was central to the comeback against Atletico, not only locking down his area but also leaving a flash of pure quality in the final third.

With Liverpool chasing the game, the centre-back produced a moment of audacity inside the box: a deft backheel that freed Dominik Szoboszlai to deliver the cross that beat Jan Oblak for the equaliser. It was the kind of touch you expect from a No. 10, not a defender.
