Zidane Confirms Mbappe as Captain: Tactical Role Under Debate

Zinedine Zidane’s reign is barely underway, but the lines of authority are already clear. On Friday, as he unveiled his first 23-man squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, the new France boss confirmed what many expected: Kylian Mbappe keeps the armband.

The hierarchy is not up for discussion. The way Mbappe is used on the pitch very much is.

Mbappe’s role: captain on the left?

Zidane spoke openly about his star’s tactical deployment, hinting that the captain may not be used as a central striker in this new-look France side, which includes five uncapped players.

“He is capable of playing in all three positions. He has said it himself,” Zidane told reporters, before adding a more personal touch. “Me, for example, I like him a lot on the left.”

That one line will echo all the way to Madrid. Mbappe’s versatility has long been both a blessing and a puzzle for his coaches. Zidane, at least for now, seems ready to push him back towards his most devastating zone: cutting in from the left, facing the game, driving at defenders.

Defensive work: Zidane shuts down the “false debate”

No France coach can escape the Mbappe debate, and this time it arrived wrapped in a familiar theme: defensive work-rate.

Real Madrid’s forwards have been under scrutiny in Spain for what many see as limited defensive contribution. That narrative followed Mbappe into the national-team press room, with a journalist questioning his effort without the ball.

Zidane cut it off sharply.

“It is a false subject, a false debate, it will have to be managed like all the other players,” he replied. “When we do not have the ball, we will have to make an effort. It will not be a problem for Kylian.”

No public rebuke. No special treatment either. Zidane’s message was simple: Mbappe is the captain, not a passenger. The defensive demands will be shared, and France’s star forward is expected to meet them.

Steering clear of politics

The press conference did not stay confined to tactics. Questions turned towards the 2027 French presidential elections and the recent controversy surrounding Mbappe’s refusal to fully wear a t-shirt supporting residents of Ceuta.

Zidane refused to be drawn into the political storm.

“I am going to dedicate myself to this task, manager of the France national team,” he said. “However, I have convictions like everyone else, I am a citizen. As for sharing them... Everyone does as they want, but I am going to try to dedicate myself to this task.”

It was a firm line: he has opinions, but they will not be played out at the podium. The message from the new coach is that his tenure will be defined on the pitch, not in the political arena.

The Zidane era officially starts on September 25, when France travel to Kocaeli to face Turkiye in League A. Three days later, the squad heads to Brussels to meet Belgium in what already feels like a serious early examination.
