Estevao Willian's Struggles at Chelsea Amidst Tactical Changes

Chelsea’s first attacking reshuffle of the night came with a sting in the tail for their Brazilian prodigy Estevao Willian.

Chasing a 1-0 deficit against Brentford with 70 minutes gone, Xabi Alonso finally rolled the dice. The new Chelsea head coach withdrew striker Danny Welbeck, pushed Morgan Rogers into the centre-forward role and introduced Geovany Quenda on the left.

For Estevao, watching from the bench again, the message felt brutal. It was already a talking point that the teenager hasn’t broken into the Premier League XI. Now he’s not even the first attacking option when Alonso needs to change a game.

Estevao stuck behind the traffic

There is, of course, a tactical layer to it. Quenda is a natural fit on the left. Estevao prefers the right flank or a more central role. With Cole Palmer nailed down on that right side and central spaces at a premium, any change involving Estevao would likely have forced either him or Palmer into an uncomfortable role on the opposite wing.

Alonso wasn’t prepared to do that. Not at 1-0 down. Not in his early weeks in charge.

Estevao will almost certainly be next in line off the bench, but the optics matter. For a player billed as one of the brightest attacking talents of his generation, slipping further down the in-game pecking order will sting. Every minute he spends watching Pedro Neto grind away on the right for the full 90 will only sharpen that frustration.

Henderson brings calm on debut

While the focus drifts to the forward line and the absent wonderkid, one of Chelsea’s most composed figures came from much deeper.

Jordan Henderson, making his debut in blue, was the standout Chelsea performer in the first half. Not because he split Brentford open or produced anything spectacular, but because he did the simple things with authority. He slowed the tempo when panic threatened, kept the ball moving, and gave Alonso’s side a measure of control in the centre of the pitch.

For a club still trying to map out its midfield hierarchy, Henderson’s assured opening act felt significant. As Estevao waits for his moment higher up the pitch, the veteran just laid down an early marker in the battle for minutes behind him.
