Vincent Kompany has wasted no time showing he will do things his own way at Bayern Munich.

On Friday night, in the Bundesliga curtain-raiser against Stuttgart, the new Bayern coach again left summer signing Ismael Saibari on the bench, just as he did in the German Super Cup win over Borussia Dortmund. The Moroccan playmaker arrived from PSV Eindhoven with a growing reputation after standout performances for both club and country, but he will have to wait a little longer for a first competitive start in Bavaria.

Instead, Kompany has doubled down on his bold reshuffle.

Kompany’s surprise call

Nathaniel Brown, a full-back by trade, once more gets the nod in the attacking midfield role. It is a striking decision from a coach who clearly values Brown’s versatility and tactical discipline high up the pitch.

Bayern line up with Manuel Neuer in goal, the captain anchoring a back line of Alphonso Davies, Kim Min-jae, Dayot Upamecano and Konrad Laimer. In midfield, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Joshua Kimmich form the double pivot, with Brown pushed on as the advanced option between the lines.

Ahead of them, the attacking trio is as sharp as it sounds: Luis Diaz and Michael Olise operating either side of Harry Kane, the Englishman again leading the line after lifting the Super Cup last weekend.

Champions set their tone

Bayern arrive at the Bundesliga opener already with a trophy in hand, having beaten Dortmund 2-1 at Signal Iduna Park in the German Super Cup last Saturday. That victory gave Kompany an immediate statement win and a template he clearly trusts.

For now, the Moroccan waits. Kompany’s message is clear: at Bayern, reputation gets you through the door, but performances – and adaptability – decide who walks out onto the pitch.
